You’ll find the settlement of Varazdin in Northern Croatia, near the Drava River. It is a beautiful city that is a testament to the Baroque culture of the region. As you walk through the streets and squares of the city, you will enjoy music, food, and buildings that have echoes of the past.
At the same time, Varazdin has embraced the future and is a hub for the growing information technology industry in Croatia.
Begin your journey with a visit to the Stari grad. The old city is a stunning fortress from Medieval times, with 15th century Gothic influences added onto the complex later. It has served as the town museum since 1925 and was the first museum from Croatia to be nominated as the European Museum of the Year in 1994.
The entomological collection held in Varazdin is equally stunning. You’ll find it at the beautiful Herzer Palace that is right in the center of the city. First established by a local high school teacher, it features the work of the Koscec family and their scientific studies of almost 80 years. Nearly 50,000 specimens are part of the permanent collection.
Then there is the Gallery of the Old and Contemporary Masters, which can be found in the stunning Sermage Palace. More than 3,000 pieces are held in the structure that was completed in 1859. Several works from the Dutch masters are part of the collection, along with a handful of Croatian contemporary masters.
Varazdin is a historical testament to the creativity and resilience of the people in Northern Croatia. It is just a short trip from Zagreb, making it the perfect day trip or a destination of choice when exploring Croatia for the first time.

Baroque music festival
A baroque music festival has been held annually in Varaždin since 1971, and attracts some of the finest musicians and their fans from Croatia and the world.
Špancir fest
Recommended to visitors is also the historical street festival Špancir fest every September.
City Guard, Purgari
The city features its old city guard, named Purgari, in various city ceremonies as well as the weekly ceremony of the ‘change of the guards’ in front of the city hall.
