Why should people visit Thessaloniki? With a history that expands over 2,300 years, Thessaloniki has had several reincarnations throughout history. It was the wealthiest city in the Byzantine empire, and evidence of that still shows today as you can see many monuments of that empire with a visit to the city.
Paul the Apostle wrote two letters to the church that was in Thessaloniki that are treasured by Christians still today. Filled with Jewish, Roman, and even Ottoman structures that compliment the Byzantine influence, a visit to Greece is incomplete without taking the time to explore what Thessaloniki has to offer.
Some Monuments Don’t Have to Be Famous
One of the first things you should do in Thessaloniki is to go visit the Ayios Nikolaos Orfanos in Ano Poli. Besides the fact that it is free and it is on the bus line, you can even walk along the eastern wall of the city to go visit this site. It may be a site that’s tucked away, but the frescos at Ayios Nikolaos Orfanos are well worth the effort to get there. You can also explore the gardens as you transport yourself back into time at this tiny church.
Don’t Forget About the Rotunda of St. George
Speaking of free things to do in Thessaloniki, one can’t forget about the Rotunda of St. George. One of the classic landmarks of the city, it was initially built in the 3rd century as part of the Galerius Palace. What makes visiting ancient buildings such an incredible experience is to see the fine details that were put into the creation of the building. In the Rotunda’s case, you’ll be gazing up at several incredible mosaics that tell the story of what life was in Byzantine times. It is currently undergoing restoration services, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the time to explore it!
Enjoy a Day At Aristotelous Square
Many people associate Greece with Aristotle, but that’s not what you’ll find at Aristotelous Square. Instead, you’ll find many authentic shops, restaurants, and a great place to find some coffee. You can take a walk by the sea or simply enjoy the ambience that this square has to offer. Some call Aristotelous Square the heart of Thessaloniki, but you’ll find it a place where you can relax the day away with a cup of coffee and fresh air that smells of the sea.
