There’s no other way to describe it. Tallinn is a Medieval masterpiece.
The lower town of Tallinn is one of the best-preserved Medieval towns on the continent. It is continually being rehabilitated and improved to maintain the feeling of walking back into history. Make sure to linger in the Town Hall square, enjoy Fat Margaret and the other components of the city wall, and tour the numerous Medieval churches in the area.
The upper town of Tallinn used to be almost completely separated from the lower town. It has been the home of the governing power of Estonia since it was created thanks to its easily defensible location. Toompea Castle, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, and the Dome Church are all worthy of a visit.
If you want to embrace the local Estonian culture, consider making your way outside the city to enjoy a day at a fantastic open air museum. There is a life-sized reconstruction of an 18th century village, including an inn, a fire station, and a schoolhouse with its 80 unique buildings. It’s about 8 kilometers west of the city center of Tallinn.
You’ll also find numerous music venues available in Tallinn, with concerts and live performances frequently available. The nightlife is thriving in the city. And, if you prefer a day trip, ferries can connect you to various other cities so you can explore some more.
Tallinn is a city of magic and wonder. There are few like it. Once it draws you in, Tallinn will never let you go. It is one of those places that everyone should see at least once in their lives.

If you’re planning a visit to Estonia, then spending some time in Tallinn is almost mandatory. Located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city is also consistently ranked as one of the top 10 digital cities in the world today. Here are just some ways you can step outside and enjoy what Tallinn has to offer.
Estonian Open Air Museum
After you’ve explored the Old Town, make your way west to explore this museum. It preserves many of the aspects of rural Estonian culture, with a farmstead from 1700s available to tour. There’s also a water mill, chapel, and an old stone sauna amongst several other structures.
St. Olaf’s Church
It is believed that this church was the tallest building in the world for nearly 100 years beginning in the mid-16th century. The church itself was first built in the 1200s and remarkably it has been Catholic, Lutheran, and now Baptist. It is still actively used, so you’ll want to call ahead for a tour. The tower of the church was even used by the KGB until 1991 for surveillance.
The City Walls
The city walls often offer temporary garden exhibits and hiking trails to enjoy and because they are for the most part intact, offer a great exploration opportunity. Several gates are still in use throughout the city and towers are sometimes open to give you a unique view of the area. Look for passages to explore throughout the area and secret gems to find.
Tallinn has seen some ups and some downs throughout history, but today you’ll find it to be a beautiful city with something unique for everyone in the family to enjoy. Plan your stay and you will be able to make memories which last for a lifetime.
