Visit Stari Grad
Located on the beautiful island of Hvar, Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns in all of Europe. The oldest sections of the city are, in fact, a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stari Grad was colonised by Ionian Greeks in the 4th century BC.
Located at the heart of the island, Stari Grad lies on a sheltered bay and is surrounded by pine forests, vineyards and olive groves. Stari Grad translates as Old Town, an apt name due to the history that can be seen throughout the town in its monuments, quaint squares, old stone houses, and buildings from the Austro-Hungarian period.
Stari Grad has its own pebble beach, Lanterna, and there are plenty of other hidden bays and sand and pebble beaches along the north side of the island. You’ll find vineyards surrounding the city, coastal vistas to enjoy, and these additional opportunities.
The Architecture
There are numerous ancient churches to see in Stari Grad, along with monasteries and an old windmill at the south side of the community’s harbor. Don’t miss Tvrdalj Castle, which was the 16th century home of the Renaissance poet Petar Hektorović.
The Archeology
The Stari Grad Plain is an ancient Greek agricultural landscape which dates back to the 4tth century BC and is still used. The stone walls and shelters have been carefully preserved for 24 centuries. This is combined with the old town walls, Roman villas, and the Illyrian forts above Stari Grad for a one-of-a-kind historical tour.
The Museum
Special exhibits come through the Stari Grad Museum frequently, often taking an in-depth look at the history of this community. There is also a permanent art collection to enjoy. Be sure to visit the museum’s website for visiting times and what exhibits are currently on display.
Stari Grad offers everything an ancient European town should have for visitors, but does it in a way that is uniquely its own. Take a walk, explore the agricultural offerings, and have a glass of wine because your stay here will be one of the best experiences of your life.
