Visit Split

The red roofs of Split link visitors to the Adriatic Sea and to history. The Greeks settled in the area over 2,000 years ago, though the city began to rise in its profile in the 4th century when Diocletian’s Palace was built. By the 7th century, it was a prominent settlement that would transition into a Byzantine city, become part of the Kingdom of Croatia, and enjoy autonomy throughout most of the Middle Ages.

About half of Split’s Old Town is formed by Diocletian’s Palace and its fortress-like structure is quite unique.

Croatia’s oldest museum, the Split Archeological Museum, was founded in 1820 and offers more than 150,000 artifacts that go back to the prehistoric times of the region.

Another option to consider is the bell tower at the Cathedral of St. Duje. Built in the 13th century, the climb can be a difficult one. The reward, however, is a view of the entire city and the central islands of Dalmatia.

Split has an amazing waterfront which invites an afternoon stroll. It’s a favorite meeting place with its waterfront cafes and nightlife options. This is where you’ll want to go if the beach is calling you during your stay as well.

People’s Square gives you the opportunity to be surrounded by Renaissance-era buildings, a clock built from the remains of a Roman tower, and the first town hall of the community. Make time to enjoy something at the City Café.

Split has beautiful neighborhoods to explore, beaches to enjoy, and history to embrace. There is always something new to see here, which makes it the perfect Croatian destination.

Best of Split

Have a great day in Split

Start the day with some activities, and in the evening, go out for some great food. The city has a range of restaurants that offer all kinds of local and international food. There are also cafes and bars. If you have knowledge of good places which is not listed, you can send the information on e-mail.

Kantun Paulina

Many people make their way to the old town center of Split because there are several outstanding dining options. The only problem? All of them are relatively expensive, even though there is good value in the menus, and the places are packed every night. If you can’t get into one of the usual dining options or you just want to get something that tastes of the region, then Kantun Paulina is the place you’ll want to be. In some ways it feels like a fast food atmosphere because the options seem simple, but the result is always delicious. Grab the grilled meat dumplings with diced onions if you want a great dining experience! You can always grab a burger or a chicken sandwich if you want, although the kobasice and a cold beer make for a great combination. You won’t be disappointed! Facebook

Restaurant Fife

One of the most overlooked places to enjoy a bite to eat in Split is Fife. It’s a buffet that almost always seems to be open! It’s high on the list of local things to do because the prices are simply outstanding, but there isn’t a compromise on the quality of food that is offered in return. You’ll be dining on picnic tables for an added bit of casualness and sometimes it is nice to just sit back on a warm day to enjoy a cold glass of fresh lemonade made on site. One of the things you must try at Fife is their pasticada. This beef stew starts with a 24 hour marination process and then the meat is slow cooked with cloves, nutmeg, wine, and prosciutto. Get a side portion of gnocchi and you’ll want to keep going back for more! Their black risotto is also quite excellent and if you stop by for a morning bite to eat, you’ll want to fill up on the palacinke. Facebook

Restaurant Nostromo

You’re going to want to reserve time in the morning and time in the evening to enjoy Nostromo. By day, this is the local fish market where you’re going to get access to the freshest seafood that has come straight off of the boat. There are also other fresh items that can be found at the market, including loaves of bread and other market delicacies. At night, the market goes away and one of the best restaurants you’ll ever enjoy springs to life. Nostromo isn’t the cheapest place you’ll ever be, but the value of the meal is right there. The menu is based on the seafood that is caught during the day and although the place is upscale compared to your other dining options, you’ll quickly see that this is likely to be one of the best meals you’ll ever eat. Our recommendation? Let the waitstaff dictate your meal because they will take care of you quite nicely. Website

Hajduk Split Football Club

The main football (soccer) club is HNK Hajduk, the most popular club in Croatia supported by a large fan association known as Torcida Split, while RNK Split is the city’s second club. Torcida Split is the oldest fan group in Europe est. 1950. The largest football stadium is the Poljud Stadium (HNK Hajduk’s ground), with around 35,000 capacity (55,000 prior to the renovation to an all-seater). Slaven Bilić, Aljoša Asanović, Igor Tudor, and Stipe Pletikosa are some of the famous Split natives who started their careers at Hajduk.

Basketball club, KK Split

Basketball is also popular, and the city basketball club, KK Split (Jugoplastika Split), holds the record of winning the Euroleague three consecutive times (1989–1991), with notable players like Toni Kukoč and Dino Rađa both of whom are Split natives.

When is the best time to travel ?

The best time to visit Split and Croatia is May, June, September and October. The weather in these months are very nice. July and August are peak season with peak prices and furthermore it can be very hot, especially in the afternoon.
