Sopron, which is located in Hungary on the border of Austria, is a city that was once in an area that was ruled by the Roman Empire. There are many homages to ancestral civilizations within the cities borders, with the most notable being the 12th century watchtower that is a remnant of when Sopron was a free royal town.
Because of its location to Communist borders in the past, the economy of Sopron has not flourished as much as other cities, but it is definitely on the rise. Today the city is known for the wine it produces, with a pinot noir and a blue frankish particularly popular on a global scale. Why should people visit Sopron? Because it is a town that has much to offer anyone who visits it.
The Gate of Faith
The symbol of the city, the Gate of Faith is one of the many features that can be found on the Firewatch Tower. Created in the memory of the Referendum of 1921 when eight villages came together and expressed their wishes to remain part of Hungary, the Tower is seen as a symbol of faithfulness. The gate itself features a sculptural group the pays homage to the myth of Hungaria, and then stepping through the gate, you can climb over 200 stairs to get a view of the city from where the guards used to be stationed. It is definitely a place where you can get in touch with what Sopron is about as a community at large.
Visit a Winery!
You can tour many wineries within the Sopron area, but maybe the most fun of them all is the Taschner Bor-es Pezsgohaz. Best described as a modern winery that focuses on the traditions of the land, you will learn that the region grew both grapes and beans on the same land. That’s right – the legumes were planted in amongst the vineyards! This helped to lend the unique flavorings to the wines that came from the Sopron region and why they were so prized. A wine shop, cellar tour, and wine tasting is also available for your pleasure when you stop for a visit.
The Church of St. Michael, or The “Goat Church”
If you like to take a look at gothic cathedrals, then you’ll want to make a few moments to take a tour of the Church of St. Michael. Built on the main square in Sopron, it was originally constructed in the 13th century. Having undergone several renovations, the church itself looks even more pristine than it likely did during its initial construction! There are interactive displays within the church, self-guiding maps that can help you tour on your own time, and a crypt to take a look at. There is a small entrance fee to the church, but you’ll find that it is a small price to pay for what you get to experience!
Are You Ready to Visit Sopron?
Sopron has a lot to offer the refined tourist, as well as the casual visitor who is simply looking to have a good time while they try to relax. Go on a wine tour and sample all of the great wines of the region, have a great meal at a local establishment, and take some time to just walk around the city and enjoy the Baroque architecture. Why should people visit Sopron? Because it is a place that honors faithfulness, which means your faithfulness in visiting will most definitely be rewarded.
