Sopot (German: Zoppot) is considered to be a major resort area and tourist spot along the Baltic Sea in Poland. Part of the tri-city complex with Gdansk and Gdynia, many people have heard of Sopot because it is home to the longest wooden pier in Europe – it stretches out over 500 meters!
Many people also love to experience the bromide spring water fountain that is within the city that is fondly nicknamed the “Inhalation Mushroom.” First mentioned as a city in 1283, the location of Sopot was initially known as a 7th century stronghold for the Slavonic people.
Take a Stroll on the Beach
The beach at Sopot is known for beautiful white sands, plenty of restaurants and shops, and plenty of cultural events that happen throughout the year. Though the waters of the Baltic Sea aren’t generally what you would calm warm, it can be enjoyable to take a swim during the last couple months of the Summer season. If you love surfing or windsurfing, you’ll enjoy the opportunities that are provided at the longest beach in Europe. Take a walk, enjoy the woods, grab a drink, and just enjoy the time you’re spending in Sopot.
Enjoy an Evening on the Monte Cassino
Often described as not really being part of the Polish experience, the Monte Cassino is a prominade that will let you get a taste of home, wherever your home may be, right there in Sopot. Take a few moments to visit the famous crooked house before grabbing a bite to eat or a few drinks at one of the bars. It’s a great way to spend an evening with someone you love as you stroll through the squares and streets after a meal as you either head back to your hotel or strike out for more adventure. Just be careful – this area can become extremely busy during the tourist season!
Have a Meal Out on the Pier
The longest wooden pier in Europe, also called a “molo,” does have an entrance fee, but at the end of the pier there is a fantastic restaurant that will give you a great look out at the bay that connects Sopot to the Baltic Sea. Though it isn’t the cheapest place to eat in the world, it will be one of the most memorable meals you’ll ever remember having. Because you have to walk the pier to get to the restaurant, it may not be the most comfortable of walks on a windy or chilly day. Your efforts will be rewarded in the end, however, if you brave the pier!
Sopot has much to offer a visitor, partially because it is geared toward welcoming tourists, but also because it has plenty of history and natural features that make visiting a city fun. From the longest beach in Europe to the longest wooden pier, there are plenty of opportunities to take a stroll with someone you love, enjoy the day, and explore different shops and restaurants.
