Found along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in southern France, Sete has grown up around an enclosed saltwater lake. It is used to for mussel and oyster fields, creating homegrown dishes that would delight any culinary critic. It is unique as a commune because there is a network of canals that link the Mediterranean to the Etang de Thau.
Make your way to the summit of a local hill and you’ll receive a stunning view of the entire coastal area. In spring, when the wildflowers are in bloom, there may be no better experience that the world offers.
Besides the coastal access and stunning seafood that Sete provides, people are drawn to this commune because of its festivals. Water jousting is particularly popular here, with it being the highlight of the town’s annual festival. When the conditions are right, you’ll find fishing, windsurfing, and lake watersports are readily available throughout Etang de Thau.
Landmarks to visit in Sete include the Lighthouse of the Mount Saint-Clair, the Theater de la Mar, and Fort Richelieu. You may also wish to spend some time exploring the Crique de l’Anau, which is a cove along the Mediterranean. You’ll also find a wonderful tribute museum, the Espace George-Brassens, dedicated to the local singer and songwriter. Then finish your stay with a visit to the old port and its magnificent presence.
