Visit Saint Tropez

Just a short day trip away from Nice, the French Riviera has never been more accessible than it is at St. Tropez. This influential artistic community brought the world pointillism and Fauvism and numerous modern artists can often be found hard at work on a beautiful day. You’re going to enjoy sand and sunshine during a visit here, but consider these additional options as you plan your holiday.

Saint-Tropez might just be one of the most overlooked locations on the French Riviera. With its panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, this village has seen it all over the years. It’s been a simple fishing village, a military stronghold, and it was the first community liberated during Operation Dragoon after World War II. With New Wave artists descending on Saint-Tropez to call it their home since, this community provides an authentic experience that goes away from the glitz and glamor of other locations along the coast. If you’re ready for the occasional celebrity sighting and warm afternoons on the beach, then you’re ready for some time at Saint-Tropez. Here’s what you can expect to find when you make this community your destination of choice.

Enjoy a Day At the Beach In Your Preferred Way

Since 1962, topless swimming has been a way of life in Saint-Tropez. When it was first introduced, the mayor of the city would order helicopters to hover over the beach to make sure that women were dressing “decently.” Today visitors can head to Tahiti Beach to have a clothing optional experience, but many of private beaches on the 5 kilometers of shoreline that this community offers are a better location for those seeking a more personal experience.

Water sports are also a way of life in Saint-Tropez. Many of the beaches offer equipment for rent, including sailboats, canoes, and windsurfing equipment. Some operators also run private power boats that can be rented for scuba diving or water skiing. It is not uncommon to rent a yacht for the day, anchor it off-shore, and enjoy a private sunbathing experience.

Although the port of Saint-Tropez is not nearly as busy as it was during its height of the 18th century, every September the regatta at the bay will draw in some of the world’s largest private yachts. It’s quite the sight to behold and it draws in many visitors, so be prepared for a small crowd with which to contend.

Saint-Tropez Has a Major Place in the History of Art

Many don’t realize it, but Saint-Tropez was the inspiration behind some of the most famous works of Matisse, Bonnard, and Marquet. The styles of pointillism and Fauvism have their roots in this community and many modern artists have called this community home. At the Ivan Art Gallery, you’ll be able to see many of these works on display for your consideration. You can even take one home – if you’re willing to bring a little extra cash with you.

As a final stop during your stay in Saint-Tropez, be sure to take a walk along the old cannons that sit by the bay. These relics are non functioning and are just the barrels of the old guns, sitting behind a stone wall, but the view itself is worth the trip. If you love old military items or browsing historical sights, you’ll get double the pleasure with your stop here.

Saint-Tropez might be a French Riviera destination, but the authentic feeling that it provides visitors makes it an accessible community for anyone. You don’t have to be wealthy to enjoy everything that this community offers. The only requirements are that you bring yourself, enough suntan lotion to protect the skin you decide to expose, and be able to enjoy beautiful weather. Everything beyond that is up to you.

Best attractions in Saint Tropez

Take a boat tour

St. Tropez has historically been a military encampment and a fishing village before it transitioned into a resort community. Many of the relics of this history can be seen off-shore, so consider taking a boat tour of the area and enjoy the gentle waves of the Mediterranean. You’re almost guaranteed to see something amazing.

Make a visit to L’Annonciade

A deconsecrated chapel converted into first a home, and now among the very best twentieth-century French art galleries in the country. Among the works to be found there are Matisse’s Corsican Landscape and Vuillard’s Two Women by Lamplight.

Linger in the market square

St. Tropez offers a market square that will let you find almost anything you could every want. Craft work, jewelry, and fruit stalls all mingle together to provide a vibrant atmosphere that is busy, but doesn’t feel overly crowded. Get there early to grab a table at one of the surrounding cafes.

Visit a quiet beach club.

Many of the beaches of St. Tropez are bustling and full of energy. That also means it can be difficult to find a spot to relax. Consider a beach club like Maison Ocoa if you want something a little quieter. There’s good wine, a great view, and reasonable prices.

Shopping in Saint-Tropez

Rue Sibilli is filled with trendy boutiques and unique items. If you’re more interested in the gastronomic delights of France, try the place de Lices, where you can find produce and regional foods as well as clothes and collectibles.

Festival and Events

The bravade is a popular festival every May 16 celebrating St. Torpes, for whom St. Tropez is rather dyslexically named. Torpes was martyred at Pisa in 68 AD, and his decapitated body washed onshore here, where it was decently buried hundreds of miles from his venerated head in Pisa. During the bravade, the bust of the saint is paraded through the streets of St. Tropez by men in old-fashoned military garb.
