When thinking of Rovinj, it is difficult not to get romantic notions about an upcoming visit.
This is a rather small community that sits on the Istrian Peninsula, but this fishing port and resort community has big aspirations to provide you with the relaxing experience you need.
As the winds come off of the Adriatic Sea, it’s easy to feel invigorated and the itch to explore soon develops. The temperature in Rovinj is almost always perfect and the Summer months provide up to 10 hours of sunshine hours every day.
Are you ready to enjoy this beautiful seaside resort community? Initially captured by the Romans and being an integral part of the Byzantine empire, what many people don’t realize is that Rovinj used to sit on an island until the small channel was filled in during the 18th century. What other surprises does this city hold for you? Let’s take a look!
The Beaches of Rovinj Have Outstanding Natural Beauty
One of the best aspects of a visit to Rovinj is that the beaches of this community have just the right amount of variety so that everyone can find something that they love. Some of the beaches might even seem to be hard to reach, but there is joy in the accomplishment of wading along the emerald waves to find a small, hidden cove. There are wide, expansive beaches that are perfect for families as well. With watersports an option at many beaches and plenty of hidden surprises, you can find your own small patch of sand or become the king of your own beach for a day. The choice is up to you.
Many of the beaches that Rovinj has to offer are Blue Flag certified, which means that are clean and well-maintained. We really love the rugged, natural beauty of Scaraba beach, which is just three kilometers from the twon center. There are only a few places of sand to enjoy, but there are plenty of hiking opportunities or the chance to sit in the shade under a tree.
If you happen to be in the city center, then you’ll want to take a few moments to enjoy the simplicity of Monte Beach. It’s on the west side of the coast and sits on a small, pebble-filled inlet. Walk down a few steps from the walls of the city and enjoy the small spaces! The sandy areas fill up fast, however, so get there early. If you want the classic beach experience, however, we recommend Lone Bay. It’s just a 15 minute walk from most places.
The Archipelago of Rovinj Are Incredible!
You’ve got to get off of the land and onto or into the water to really enjoy everything that Ravinj has to offer. Your journey begins with a sailing tour of the surrounding archipelago. Get yourself onto one of the many tour boats that are available, bring your camera along, and you’ll have an amazing experience. The waves can be a bit choppy, however, so be prepared to bring your sea legs!
The archipelago has also been a sailor’s nightmare over the years because of all the hidden, rocky outcroppings. That has caused a number of ships to come up on the rocks over the years and that means there are several diving opportunities to enjoy. One of the best is the Baron Gautsch as the corals are just starting to form on the hull of the ship and the waters are crystal clear most days all around it.
If you’ve got a boat for an extended period of time, then you might also want to take a day trip to explore Lim Fjord. Red Island and the Island of Maskin are also options for exploration and each has some unique views for you to enjoy.
Do You Prefer Your Adventures To Be On Land?
One of the best things to do when visiting Rovinj is to rent a bicycle to go off and explore the coast. There are a number of trails that will take you right out onto the water and then bring you back into land so you can enjoy a beautiful full canopy of trees over you as you pedal down a well-groomed dirt trail. The trails take you through some of the oldest ruins that Rovinj has to offer and some of the views you can see are only obtained by hiking or biking.
You’ll also want to climb the tower of St. Euphemia’s Church if you spend any time in the old town at all. You’ll get an expansive view of the entire area, including the various marinas and islands that are all within reach, and it is truly one of the best views in the entire region. The old town itself has much to offer with tight cobblestone streets, market stalls with local craftsmanship on display and plenty of artwork to enjoy, it’s a relaxing, enjoyable day when you stay near the city center.
You might also enjoy getting out of town for a little while to explore the ancient village of Monkodonja. This is an extensive site of ruins where ancient stone walls still stand up to the ravages of time. There are some tight walkways to explore that have cover stones still installed in some areas and the fields are wide and expansive. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a cool, sunny afternoon!
Are You Ready To Explore All That Rovinj Has to Offer?
With amazing dining options, informative museums, and many beaches to enjoy, Rovinj speaks of romance and relaxation. Whether you like some adventures with a trip or you just wanted to be pampered with a cocktail, you’ll be able to get exactly what you want here.
