Characterized by golden beaches along the Cote d’Azur and a stunning mountain landscape inland, this is a region of enormous contrasts. In summer, its Mediterranean climate is warm and sunny enough to attract lots of tourists to the coastal towns and the azure sea. In the winter, towns and villages become quiet again, and the mountains of the region really come into their own.
The westernmost corner of the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur region marks the start of the French Riviera, seen against the backdrop of mountains that seem to tumble right down to the sea. Nice is traditionally the playground of the rich and famous, while nearby Cannes is synonymous with its international film festival and associated red carpet.
Further east along the Riviera, St. Tropez harbor boasts a harbor with yachts and a nostalgia from the 1950s and 1960s, the heyday of this resort when Brigitte Bardot strolled along the coast.
Marseille is a city where you can actually see real life happening right in front of you. It is France’s largest commercial port. In addition to being a typical Provencal character with colorful markets, Marseille also bears witness to North African influences.
Although Marseille is the capital of the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur, Avignon is certainly the jewel in the crown. Known as the City of the Popes, Avignon is one of the few cities in France that is completely authentic with its perfectly preserved ramparts, the Pope’s Palace and the famous bridge.
Napoleon’s journey from exile in Elba passes through cities such as Dignes-les-Bains through the snow-capped Alps and from there to the alpine city of Gap. The mountains become severe and close to the Italian border. Tourists flock here in the winter to enjoy the many ski slopes. During the summer months, spectators come to see the Tour de France, which regularly passes through the Gap.
