Located on the Clain river in the western portion of central France, Poitiers is a city that will immediately transport you back into time. A majority of the city is constructed in some form of historical architecture, with the predominant form being Romanesque. This leads to several picturesque moments that can be had no matter where you might be on this city’s streets and the Celtic influence from the founding of Poitiers can still be felt today. Are you planning a visit to Poitiers in the near future? If so, we’ve put together a few essential suggestions to help make your planning a bit easier so you can enjoy everything that this city has to offer. Let’s take a look!
The Oldest Church in France Resides in Poitiers
One of the first places to visit while on a trip to Poitiers must be the oldest church in France. It’s the Baptistere Saint-Jean and some believe it is even the oldest Christian building of any kind in the country. Of course the religious significance of the church is on display, but it is also one of the most prominent examples of Merovingian architecture that you’ll find anywhere in the world. It has been fully restored and despite the many constructive efforts, the authenticity of the church remains.
While you’re looking at religious structures in Poitiers, we also recommend a visit to the Notre-Dame la Grande, which dates back to at least the 10th century. It’s been completed in a high Romanesque style that contains traces of Gothic influence thanks to some of the restoration efforts. Of note here is the artwork above the choir that depicts the apocalypse of Revelation. It’s the oldest church of its kind in the country as well.
The Museums of Poitiers Are Much More Modern
Although Poitiers isn’t the biggest city you’ll ever visit, with less than 100,000 residents, it still has a good collection of museums that are worth visiting. The best of them all is the Musee Sainte-Croix, which was built in 1974 off of the plans of Jean Monge. It hosts period exhibitions that focus on everything from pre-history to modern art, but most notably contains sculptures done by both Rodin and Claudel.
As you progress through the city, be sure to linger in the city center to enjoy the efforts at making it more pedestrian friendly. There are numerous cafes, shops, and restaurants in this quarter to enjoy, while the setting itself lends well to anyone with a hint of a photographic eye. The architecture throughout the city center is well preserved and is a testament to the efforts of this city to preserve and restore their part of the world’s history.
