With a history that can be traced back over 6,000 years, Plovdiv is one of history’s oldest cities. Located on the banks of the Maritsa River, this city has had numerous names throughout history, but despite that, Plovdiv has always been a center of economic development. With Roman sewerage and an advanced water system that was protected by a double wall, the importance of the city cannot be understated.
What makes Plovdiv unique is that many of these ruins are well preserved and there is much more to find as much of the ancient city has yet to be excavated. Why should people visit Plovdiv? With so much history at your fingertips, you’ll be able to discover much about the past, present, and even future.
The Roman Theatre
As one of the more complete Roman theaters that is currently in existence today, that alone makes a visit to it in Plovdiv worthwhile. Unlike other ruins, this theatre is one where you can explore, be on stage, and enjoy the history of the site. Many of the ruins within Plovdiv charge for entry into them, but this is one of the ruins that you can see in a package of five different sites for a reduced fee. Concerts are still played within the confines of this theatre, nearly 2,000 years after its creation, which is amazing unto itself. At night, the columns are lit up majestically, making it a memory you’ll treasure forever if you have a love for Roman history.
Continuing on the Roman theme, next to Old Town Plovdiv is a quarter of the city that is known as Philippopolis. The city, which was initially built on seven hills, isn’t going to be very forgiving to you if you choose to walk here, but the reward will be fantastic. Music is generally playing in the quarter and the area has recently been restored to accept more visitors once again. It is a smaller theatre than the one previous, but when you add in the visit to Old Town, you’ll have a day that you will love… and tire you out!
Get Out of the City!
If you don’t mind a short excursion, then a trip to Assen’s Fortress should be on your agenda if this is your first trip to Plovdiv. Not only is it an amazing view of the valley below, you’ll get a chance to explore the surrounding at your leisure. The castle is intact, but to preserve it that way, like many other ruins, you’re not allowed to tour inside. If you add in a tour guide to lead you around the area, however, you’ll find out what the locals here have already discovered – you can’t beat a trip to Assen’s Fortress on a clear day!
Are You Ready To Visit Plovdiv?
Plovdiv is a city that is proud of its history and it shows it in many different ways. Though the Roman ruins tend to take a precedence within the city, there are numerous other influences that you’ll see as you take a walking tour. Don’t forget to sample some local cuisine, enjoy the local galleries, and grab some coffee as you enjoy your trip here. Why should people visit Plovdiv? You’ll be able to learn, relax, and explore at an affordable price.
