Located in the southwestern part of Cyprus, Paphos is a community that is actually part of New Paphos. Old Paphos, which was the birthplace of Aphrodite, was the ancient capital of the island and many Christian pilgrims head toward this community because Paul the Apostle visited the town in the 1st Century.
Paphos is listed as a world treasure by UNESCO and this city offers a number of seaside and inland adventures that will help you relax in the way that best suits you. If your travels have you headed toward Paphos in the near future, then here are a few ideas that can help you enjoy your journey to the fullest!
You Can’t Miss Paphos Castle!
Originally built by the Byzantines to be a fort to protect the local harbor, it was built into a castle by the Ottomans after they captured the island. You can’t miss it at the edge of Paphos Harbor and it has been used for a wide variety of needs over the years. It’s been a prison, a defensive fortress, and even a warehouse for salt. Most recently, the local cultural festival is held here every September.
There are also a number of mysterious tombs that lie about two kilometers northwest of the harbor and many of them date back to the 4th century BC. The Tombs of the Kings is a World Heritage Site and although they have been known to exist for centuries, it is only in the last couple of decades that any extensive exploration has taken place.
A final stop along your historical tour of Paphos is the Rock of Aphrodite, which is considered her actual birthplace. It comes out of the turquoise waters, often has a lot of sea foam that comes around it because of the rough seas, and makes for a majestic image. There is a good restaurant on the site and a tourist pavilion to explore and enjoy.
Paphos Has a Number of Fine Beaches to Enjoy
Although farming contributes a lot to the local economy and offers visitors the chance to enjoy locally grown grapes, bananas, and tobacco, the tourism industry is what keeps Paphos strong. It’s no wonder, considering the beautiful seaside hotels that dot the beaches in this community. You have your pick of a number of wonderful options, but buyer beware: if you’re not staying at the resort and you try to enjoy the beach, you may be asked to leave.
As a final stopping point, you’ll want to take a tour of St. Paul’s Avenue. It’s the primary arterial road in Paphos and it connects the shopping districts with the coast. Get over to Limanaki, or the “little port,” for a number of little restaurants and small shops to enjoy where the avenue is actually closed to traffic. It’s the perfect way to end your holiday on Paphos!
What would you like to include with your journey to this historical community on Cyprus? Whether you wish to stress the old or the new, you’ll find that everything you’ve ever wanted in a holiday can be found here. Plan your trip today and then prepare to let the world just pass you by once you arrive.

Best of Paphos
What to see and do in Paphos ?
The Theoskepasti Church
A particularly interesting one as its name means “Veiled by God”. It has been given that name as according to local tradition, there was a fog which was sent by God which was sent to protect the church from Arab raids. The church has since been redeveloped and it was rebuilt in 1923. Another interesting church is the Ayia Paraskevi Church. It comes from the Byzantine period and it boasts some beautiful mural paintings.
The Baths of Aphrodite
Are also extremely beautiful. They are said to be where the Goddess Aphrodite used to take her beauty baths and they are shaded by a picturesque fig tree. There are nature trails that are run in the area so if you are a lover of nature then it would definitely be worth taking part in them.
