Ouistreham has served as a trading port since it was established in the Middle Ages. The name of this commune literally means “Oyster Village.” Today, it serves as the port for the city of Caen thanks to its location at the mouth of the Canal de Caen a la Mer.
The Ouistreham locks are one of the highlights of a visit to this small community. Because it is also a ferry community, you’ll find two types of services to enjoy: those along the waterfront and those along the interior of the community. The waterfront provides better views, but the shops and restaurants along the interior provide better pricing.
Ouistreham saw strong fighting in 1944 during the second global war. Allied soldiers fought from Sword Beach to Pegasus Bridge. Remnants of the defensive structures that were in place attempting to repel the attack can still be seen throughout this small commune.
There is also a huge bathing beach that Ouistreham hosts that has plenty of space for everyone, even when there is a large crowd enjoying a beautiful day. Park along the Boulevard Aristide Briand and enjoy the fine sands. The beach is clean and there are cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. When the tides go out, it is popular to hunt for seashells in the remnants of the tide.
Whether you wish to take a lovely walk along the shore or watch the boats come through the locks as you wait for a ferry, Ouistreham has much to offer. Discover it for yourself on your next weekend retreat.
