When Ostrava comes to mind, the first pictures that are seen are of the colorful buildings and expansive squares that have made this Czech city famous the world over. The city was built because of the coal reserves in the area, making it one of the industrial centers of the country as well. During the Soviet era, it was a highly polluted city because of the heavy levels of industry and although it has been greatly improved over the years, Ostrava is still considered one of the most polluted cities in the EU.
Don’t let that discourage you from paying this wonderful city a visit in the future! Ostrava has welcoming arms that are waiting to show you a fantastically wonderful time. Here’s just a glimpse of what you could expect on a visit here.
Some Places Are Beyond Compare in Ostrava
Because mining has been a central component to the growth of the city, it makes sense that a number of the attractions within Ostrava would be based on this industry. A number of them are completely unique in the Czech Republic and include the Michal Mine, the Mining Museum, and the Lower Vitkovice Area. These may be considered technical landmarks, but they will enhance your visit to this community.
You may also find that a number of people tend to funnel toward one area of the city on a consistent basis. Where they are going is called Stodolni Street, which is actually a collection of streets that is just off of the city center. It’s the heart of the city’s nightlife and there are a number of pubs and clubs that are packed every night.
For a historical monument, the Silesian Ostrava Castle provides a classic look at what the architectural components of the region were in the early years. The castle itself was built in the late 13th century and it sits at the confluence of the two rivers in the region. In the 16th century, a Gothic castle was built on the grounds, but burned down in 1872.
What Else Does Ostrava Have To Offer?
For a family friendly place to visit, the Ostrava Zoo has a few options for you to enjoy together. It was officially opened in 1951 and originally had just 8 animals, with 5 of them being pheasants. Today’s zoo is a bit bigger, offering 230 animals with which you an interact. There’s a petting zoo on the grounds and their biggest hit is a 3 year old elephant named Rashmi, who was born at the zoo.
For a final stop, go where everyone else goes on a weekend day in Ostrava and experience the Ema Heap for yourself. Sure – it looks like a big pile of dirt, but it’s a big pile of dirt that’s on fire and offers spontaneous ignitions. It’s 82 hectares in size, produces rare minerals and some unique flora and fauna. Just make sure you stay on the marked trails so you don’t spontaneously turn into a pillar of flame!
What kind of adventure does Ostrava hold for you? Although it won’t make many Top 10 lists for a tourist destination, this city has a worthiness in its own right for a holiday. Plan your trip today and you will most certainly enjoy your time away!
