Visit Osijek
For many around the world, Osijek might just be the best city to visit that they’ve never even heard of before this very moment! It’s one of the largest cities in Croatia and its name comes from the location of the city.
It was built on elevated ground around wetlands and the name literally means “ebbing the tide.” Although the city has seen several conflicts over the centuries, the recent Croatian war for independence caused the most extensive damage to the city, especially to the Cathedral of St’s. Peter and Paul. Although the scars of this war still exist and the memories of the war crimes that happened here will never fade, this city has much to offer to every visitor.
Are you planning a trip to Osijek or wish to see it for yourself? We’ve put together some ideas to consider for your trip so that you can have an itinerary that will create a memory that will last for a lifetime
Cathedral Of Saints Peter and Paul Isn’t Really a Cathedral?
The sheer size of the co-cathedral for these two saints makes it easy to see why it is called a cathedral, but in reality it is just considered a local parish for the Roman Catholic Church. The spires stretch up nearly 90 meters into the sky and is a classic example of neo-Gothic sacral architecture. It is the second tallest building in all of Croatia and a full mass can easily seat 3,000 people. Nearly 3.5 million bricks were used in its construction and if you can climb to the top of one of the towers, you’ll have an incredible view of Osijek.
Continuing your exploration of the city, one of the best things to do is just take a walking tour. You can take a guided tour for a small fee to get a local perspective on the sights of the city or take your own tour if you prefer. It’s a fantastic way to get a feel of the history, culture, and vibrancy that defines life for those that call this town home. Be sure to stop for a warm beverage if the day happens to be a bit breezy.
Two Protected Parks Are National Landmarks In Osijek
Tomislav Park and the Municipal Park of King Peter Kresimir IV are both protected landmarks that date back to the turn of the 20th century. Although both are worthy of a visit, our recommendation would be to go to Tomislav Park if you can only get to one during your visit. More than just your ordinary park in an ordinary place, it runs along the banks of the Drava. You’ll find a mixture of both French and English landscaping here and the linden tree that commemorates 1,000 years of the Croatian kingdom has a central role in the park.
While along the Drava, be sure to take advantage of the riverwalk and the promenade on a sunny afternoon. You’ll not only enjoy the stroll, but the views of the city in the afternoon sun seem to twinkle with a particular joy. A stroll down the wide Europa Avenue is also perfect for a look at some of the oldest homes in Osijek that have a regal stature all their own.
Are you ready to visit Osijek to see it for yourself ? Utilize these recommendation in conjunction with your own plans and you’ll see for yourself just how enjoyable this city can be!
