Visit Nysa
Founded at some point in the 10th century, Nysa is one of the oldest cities in its region. Fortifications for the city were installed around 1350 and helped to defend the area from invasions in the coming years. At one point, it was one of the most important urban centers in Eastern and Central Europe.
Nysa suffered extensive damage during the 1940s and much of its historic architecture was lost. Only the most important landmarks and monuments were rebuilt.
St. Jacob and Agnes Church may be the most important and influential landmark in the city. Originally consecrated in 1198, it had to be completely rebuilt in 1945. At 71m in height, there are 19 chapels to be found within the Gothic structure.
The Church bell tower is quite impressive as well, standing 43m in height. The tower was never finished, as the original plans called for it to be over 120m in height. It currently serves as the home of the best works of local goldsmiths.
One of the most recent restoration efforts, the Town Hall tower, was finally rebuilt in 2009. It is a view tower that helps you see the beautiful views offered by the city. The original tower was over 95m high and often called one of the most beautiful of its type in the region.
You can also go visit the tower gates of Nysa, as two of the old fortifications have managed to survive. The Wroclaw Gate stands 33m tall and is a beautiful Baroque masterpiece.
