Did you know that Croatia has three towns that are named Novigrad? To eliminate some of the confusion, the county where the town is located is added to the name. You’ll find Novigrad Istria along the extreme northern coastline on the Adriatic Sea, just off the Mirna River.
The Greeks once settled in the region and called the area Neapolis. From the 13th century on, the modern city has worked on developing and today it has become a beautiful reminder of the Medieval era. Its peninsular location has retained the ancient layout and structure, with winding, narrow streets leading you to shops that have hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. The town wall still stands, with battlements in place, and two round towers. Architecture from the period when the Venetians controlled the area can still be seen as well, with several houses and the town loggia serving as landmark reminders.
The cobbled streets that wind throughout the town are surrounded by traditional Croatian buildings that give Novigrad its unique charm. The town has managed to retain its historic feel despite becoming a popular tourist destination. The charming seaside town has a rich history that can be explored in the streets or in the many museums and exhibitions across the town.
Daytrips and excursions to the nearby islands that surround the peninsula are a great way to see some of the beautiful natural scenery of the region, especially the breathtaking coves and bays that are characteristic of the region. The national parks nearby are also home to some wonderful views and fascinating wildlife. Hiring mountain bikes is a great way to explore the trails and paths that wind through the countryside.
While visiting Novigrad Istria, be sure to enjoy some of the specialties of the area. Seafood dishes, paired with Istrian wine, is always a beautiful combination. You’ll find an ice cream parlor down by the main square, several bistros and quick-service restaurants to enjoy, and a friendly atmosphere that will make you feel comfortable and welcome.
Visiting Novograd Istria is a bright, memorable, and fun experience. Relax by the sea, tour the city at your own pace, and choose your own adventure in this city that recalls a long-lost era.
