Historically, Nin has been an important part of Croatian culture for more than 1,000 years. It was the seat of the Princes of Dalmatia and served as the center of the Croatian branch of the Bishopic church. 7 Croatian kings were crowned here. Not bad for a town that struggles to exceed a full-time population of 1,000 people.
What you’ll find with a visit to Nin is a chance to explore history. The lagoon on which its historical center sits is just 500 meters in diameter, which means you won’t have to go far to see some amazing things. The Church of Saint Nicholas, the Church of the Holy Cross, and a replica of the Condura Croatica are highlights of the historic tour.
Then make your way over to Queen’s Beach. At 3km in length, it is one of the longest sandy beaches that Croatia offers. It’s part of the lagoon, with shallow waters, and is a wonderful place to take the entire family.
You’ll also find the remains of a Roman temple near Nin, one of the largest sites of its type along the Eastern Adriatic. Originally build in the 1st century by Vespazian, the details on some of the pieces that remain are quite impressive.
As a final stop, consider a tour of the Museum of Antiquities. Although the museum is small, the number of exhibits on display are quite numerous.
It may only take a few moments to explore the town center of Nin, but the history is offered in abundance. Bring your comfortable shoes and be prepared to have a great adventure.
