Visit Motovun

Located in central Istria, Motovun is a Medieval town that has retained much of its charm. Built on the ancient city of Castellieri, it sits high on a hill with homes that are scattered around the peak. Within the inner walls of the city, you can find two gravestones from early Roman inhabitants that date from the 1st century.

While staying in Motovun, you’ll want to experience the famous Motovun forest. With 10 square kilometers to explore, it is one of the best places in the world to collect truffles. The forest is filled with oaks and artificially flooded to maintain the quality of the natural conditions. Due to a favourable climate and the influence of Mirna river, Motovun forest is one of the most favourable places for “hunting” truffles and experts point out that the white truffle from this part of Istria is one of the highest quality truffles in the world. Hospitality workers in many agricultural tourisms and taverns offer various imaginative meals in combination with truffles, which is a true treat for the most demanding gourmands.

On the slopes of the hill, vineyards help to grow the grapes that are turned into good wine. Of course, a glass of top quality wine from one of the vineyards stretching around the city is unavoidable with a good meal. The most popular wines are those from the Istrian sorts of white malvasia and red teran.

Since 1999, Motovun has also hosted an international avante-garde film festival that features the work of independent artists. Held over the course of a week in July or August, screenings are often held in the historic areas of the city.

You can’t go wrong with a walking tour of the city either. Highlights of the tour include the old Medieval city gate, the Old Church of Motovun, and the Parish Church of St. Stephen.

Apart from gastronomy, Motovun also offers many excitements for culture lovers. This is a town filled with interesting churches, walls and picturesque stone streets that are especially alive during the film festival. Bicyclists enjoy the bicycle paths that go through the untouched nature of the Mirna river valley,

If you’re looking for a quieter Croatian adventure that takes you away from the crush of the coast, then consider Motovun. You’ll still have access to the coastal beaches if you wish while being able to enjoy the rolling green hills of Istria.
