Visit Mont Saint Michel
Mont Saint-Michellies about 1 kilometer off the coast of Normandy, it is a unique fortification that has held strategic prominence in the region since ancient times. It has also been the seat of the monastery which bears the name of the commune since the 8th century. Although it is situated on an island, at times of low tide, it is accessible by foot.
During the Hundred Years’ War, this island commune remained unconquered. At the island’s peak, more than 1,100 people lived there full-time. Today, fewer than 100 people call it their home. More than 3 million people visit here each year, making it one of France’s most popular and recognizable landmarks. The island and its bay are listed as world heritage sites and the 60 buildings are listed as historical monuments.
You won’t need to wait for low tide to venture out to the Mont today. A bridge and dam complex was completed in 2014, designed by Dietmar Feichtinger. The waters run freely around the island and improves access. Every so often, however, a super tide can come through and prevent access. In 2015, the new bridge was completely submerged during a day of high sea levels.
Inside the walls of Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll feel like you are taking a trip through time. Abandoned canons, ancient walls, and the cloister are all impressive in their own way. About 50 shops serve the island. Museums, restaurants, and hotels are all available as well. It is a timeless location, beautiful by any definition, and the perfet place for a holiday or weekend retreat.
