Manisa has a population of 300.000 an the city is situated to the east of Izmir. Located near the western coast of Turkey, Manisa offers an historic city quarter to explore, access to Mount Spil National Park, and easy access to world-class sites such as Sardes and Alasehir.

While touring Manisa, one will come across numerous architectural landmarks. Of particular note is the 16^th century Sultan Mosque. Built to honor the mother of Suleyman the Magnificent, a festival is held on the grounds every year in March, the Mesir Festival, and it is a national level event.

The area around Manisa is a natural paradise, so slipping outside the city for a day or two must be on the agenda. Camping areas are abundant, especially around the national park. You may just encounter a herd of Tarpan horses while out there. Several deer protection areas and birdwatching trails are also available to tour.

As you get outside the city, you’ll find that the viniculture of the region is quite impressive. Some vineyards have been continually worked for more than 1,000 years and have created unique opportunities to enjoy the many products that can be produced from the local grapes.

The city museum offers ethnographic and archeological exhibits that tell the story of the local region with great detail and makes for a nice afternoon tour.
