Visit Machico
In East Madeira lies Machico. It is a historic city where explorers first settled in 1420. The population is 10.000 and it is the second most populated city on Madeira. Machico was the first capital of Madeira from 1440 – 1496.
Whale Museum
The Madeira Whale Museum’s permanent exhibitions occupy over 1.000m2 divided into two rooms. The permanent exhibitions are open to the public since September 2011 and the visitor is invited to explore the waters around Madeira to discover its riches and learn more about the whales, dolphins and other marine life that inhabit these waters. The visitor is also transported in time to the early 1940s, to learn more about the history of whaling in Madeira. Website
Fortim do Pico
The viewpoint of Fortim do Pico was built as a lookout point in 1708, and was later dismantled in 1804. Today we can still see the walls in gray masonry. From this viewpoint you have a fascinating view on the western part of the Island. On clear days, you can see the Island of Porto Santo.
Viewpoint Porto da Cruz
Viewpoint located in Porto da Cruz offers a magnificent view of the sea and the green slopes of the island. Penha da Águia stands out on the horizon, a huge rocky cliff that rises 580 m above sea level.
Viewpoint Miradouro da Portela
The Miradouro da Portela, located between Porto da Cruz and Machico, allows one to observe one of the most beautiful landscapes of Madeira. Here you will find a magnificent scenery of mountains, which in a valley, spill out into the sea. From here we have a great view of the Port of Cruz and the Penha d’Águia, which although located on the north coast of the island, belong to the municipality of Machico. We can still see Cortado area in Santana.
Levada da Portela – Riberio Frio
As for this particular route, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Madeira, where it is possible to appreciate the true natural patrimony of this island, because the route is full of endemic species of flora and fauna of Madeira. The magnificent vegetation of all the vegetation fills the eyes and the soul of the walkers, wrapping them in a calm and serene environment. The solar rays, warm and luminous, insist on infiltrating between the laurel and other plants typical of this area.
