As one of the largest cities in Austria, Linz has a number of advantages that make it the perfect place for your next getaway. It’s just a short drive south of the Czech border and sits on both sides of the Danube.
Originally founded by the Romans, the first documented name of Linz comes from late in the 8th century. It has always been an important trading community, being on north-south and east-west trading routes. At one point, Linz was even the most important city of the Hapsburg Empire, although most people know of Linz because it was the home of Johannes Kepler.
Are you ready to explore what Linz has to offer you during your upcoming visit? Here are a few ideas for you to include on your itinerary so you can enjoy every moment of your time away.
Linz Is the Culture Mecca of Austria and It Shows
There are some amazing sights to see in Linz and many of them are revolutionary in some unique way. The city has always had a focus on being at the cutting edge and that has never been more evident than in what can be found at the ARS Electronica Center. This museum opened in 2009 and has a focus on digital media, technology, and science. The design of the building is intended to be what a future ship on the Danube could look like and there are numerous exhibits and floor plans that provide an interactive experience.
The ARS Electronica Center is striking at night as the LED skin on the building changes colors, but on the other side of the Danube stands Lentos and it is remarkable in its own right. It has one of the best collections of modern art that you’ll find in all of Austria with featured works by Warhol, Kimt, and Schiele headlining the large exhibitions. There are guided tours on Thursdays and Sundays and an English-only tour on the first Saturday of the month.
If you happen to have a few free moments while visiting Linz, then head a little further away from Lentos and get to the Hauptplatz. This square is filled with pavement cafes that are surrounded by beautiful, colorful pastel Renaissance homes. There are street performers present throughout the day and the Trinity Column stands 20 meters tall and gleams in the sunlight. It commemorates the plague victims and was a symbol of public faith.
There Is a Vibrant Music and Arts Scene in Linz
If you loved what you were able to see at Lentos, then you’ll want to spend a day to enjoy what Linz calls their “Cultural Mile.” It’s a park that runs right along the Danube and is a wonderful place to relax when you’re ready to let the day just pass you away. It includes the Brucknerhaus and the park is often used for the various music and arts festivals that Linz hosts throughout the year.
The Music Theater was built in 2013 and is the newest addition to the Cultural Mile. It is one of the most modern opera houses in all of Europe and offers 5 different stages to enjoy a show. The biggest hall sits up to 1,200 people, while intimate stages seat as few as 200 seats. Although it is considered an opera house, it holds several different styles and genres of musical performances throughout the year. Check the local calendar to see what will be playing during your stay in Linz.
Once you’ve finished seeing the sights, then you’ll also want to enjoy an excellent meal. That’s why you’ll want to get yourself to Herberstein, which is just down the road from Lentos and just outside of Schlosspark. The interior replicates an Oriental lounge and there’s a garden that is absolutely draped in ivy to enjoy. The wine list is incredible and there are a number of fusion dishes to enjoy. We recommend anything that they’ll make for you with the fresh sturgeon and they do amazing things with their braised beef cheeks.
Why Not Get Out and See Linz From the Danube?
With the Danube cutting through the middle of the city, it provides a unique exploration opportunity for those who want to see the heart of the city. Cruises are available at Schiffsstation, which is right along the bridge that crosses on the 129. Boats are sent toward Passau and a round trip takes about 7 hours for just €25. You can also get a one way or round trip from Linz to Vienna for just €64 and that’s an 11 hour trip in total.
If you don’t want to be out on the water, then a visit to the Mariendom could be the perfect way to spend the day. The New Cathedral offers a large neo-Gothic glimpse that has some amazing pinnacles and buttresses to enjoy. It was built in the middle of the 19th century and the tower sits at 134 meters, legislated to be smaller than the great Stephansdom in Vienna. Stained glass windows dominate the building and show scenes that cover the history of Linz.
For an amazing view of Linz, you’ll want to climb to the top of Postlingberg, which gives you a beautiful vista of the city and the river that cuts through it. You’ll take a 30 minute gondola ride up the world’s steepest mountain railway and enjoy the view at a total height of 537 meters.
