Visit Limassol

Limassol was initially built between two ancient Cypriot cities: Amathus and Kourion. The historical center of the city is located around Limassol Castle, which was constructed during the Medieval period, along with the Old Port. You can still see the vestiges of these old cities when you explore this beautiful Mediterranean community.

Kourion offers a beautiful Greco-Roman theater that is impressive in its size and scope. In Ancient Amathus, you’ll find Greek columns still standing amongst the ruins that may be more than 2,000 years old. Some graves in Amathus are at least 4,000 years old, so colonies have been on the island for as long as most documented “modern” human civilizations.

The Third Crusade made its way through Limassol and would eventually lead to the Anglo-Normans taking over. The governor attempted to hold King Richard’s sister and fiancée hostage, then promised to help the king liberate the Holy Land, and then reneged on those promises. Richard arrested the governor and allegedly destroyed what was left of Amathus.

Several landmarks, including Limassol Castle, still stand and offer visitors a unique experience. There are 10 total castles on Cyprus, built by the Byzantines around the 11^th century, and may offer collections that trace the history of the region. Complemented by the museums of Limassol, you’ll find artifacts dating to the Roman Period and Neolithic Age.
