Visit Le Havre
Located within the estuary of the Seine River, Le Havre offers visitors a lot of variety with a visit thanks to its prime location on the shores of the English Channel. It’s home to the second largest port in France, which is only fitting since the city’s name literally means “the port.” Officially founded as a city and port in the early 16th century, this community struggled to grow for a number of reasons for nearly three centuries. Once it did begin to grow, however, there was no looking back! What could your visit to Le Havre entail? Here are a few suggestions to help you plan out the perfect trip to this coastal community.
Le Havre Offers a Modern Look With Historic Appeal
With the Allied bombings of 1944, Le Havre was virtually eliminated from the map. After a concentric rebuilding effort, however, this port city returned with the stubborn determination it has always had. Right along the edge of the southwestern part of the city sits the Museum of Modern Art, which has some of the world’s biggest names on display. Degas, Pissarro, Money, Renoir, and Boudin are all included in the permanent collection. There’s a large section for Dufy as well, who was born in Le Havre.
You’ll also want to make some time to enjoy what the city’s landmark, Le Volcan, has to offer. It’s the primary cultural hub and offers an art cinema and several concert halls to enjoy. Performance art is a common theme, but culinary theater and other options are available routinely as well.
If you’re looking for a quiet little getaway instead of a lot of noise, then head over to the Jadins Suspendus. You’ll find it about a kilometer north of the typical visitor locations and this old fortress sits on a hill that has been transformed by a number of gardens. Plants from five continents are featured throughout the greenhouses and garden spaces and provide a place for quiet wanderings that will make you want to linger.
Want To Make the Night Last All Night Long?
There aren’t many live venues for some music in the evening in Le Havre, but a stop to the Cabaret Electric will help you cure any blues that you might have. It’s housed in one of the most striking buildings in the city and the bar has a vibrant personality that is certain to bring a smile to your face, even if your first and best inclination is to always frown!
For the classic brasserie experience, Le Havre offers La Taverne Paillette for consideration as well. With amazing seafood platters and salads that are surprisingly crisp and good, you’ll be able to satisfy any craving you might have. Even if all you want is a massive bowl of mussels, this place will help satisfy the traditional or adventurous cravings you might have.
