Karlovac was named after its founder, who happened to be Charles II, Archduke of Austria. Built from scratch in the late 16th century to strengthen defenses against the Ottomans, it is a city that is filled with historical monuments, beautiful parks, and intriguing cultural sites to explore.
Begin your journey at Dubovac Castle. It overlooks the city and the tower is believed to have been built in the 13th century. By the 15thcentury, the castle had been rebuilt to give it a Renaissance flavor. In 1837, Romanticism elements were added to the structure and it was fully restored again in 1952. You’ll find museum exhibits, a model of the region, and beautiful grounds to explore.
Then begin exploring the town. Karlovac is designed as a six-pointed star, divided into 24 blocks of equal size. Within the Old Town, once protected by the city’s defensive walls, you’ll find numerous reminders of the merchants, artisans, and military personnel that once called the area home. After you’ve finished wandering the streets, rent a raft and float down the river for a unique view of the city.
The Korana River was once a popular destination because it reportedly offered healing qualities. Today, come to enjoy the riverside beach and the warm sunshine. Diving boards, a café, and several water sports are available to enjoy.
