Best of Izmir
Classically known as Smyrna, Izmir is a city that celebrates its history and traditions. This is evidenced by the city’s extensive schedule of festivals, exhibitions, and fairs, often held in the city’s extensive central park.
The sights of the city complement these events quite nicely. The Agora of Smyrna, for example, has been arranged into an open-air museum that allow visitors to explore the ancient history of the city. Asansor provides an overview of the city and a restaurant at the top of the column provides a fantastic fine-dining experience.
The harbor is open and inviting in Izmir as well. You’ll notice a beautiful marble tower there, the Clock Tower, which stands 25m in height. It was built in 1901 to commemorate the ascension of a king to the Ottoman throne in 1876. Four fountains are placed around the tower to create an amazing scene when operational.
Outside the central district of Izmir is Bird Paradise, which has more than 200 different species of birds. An open-air zoo is in the same area as the bird sanctuary and is an excellent stop for those who enjoy birdwatching. It is a protected area for water fowl, so some limitations may apply at specific times during the year.
Then there are the beach views, the promenade, and resort accommodations that can help you to relax in your own preferred manner.
