Visit Indonesia

The republic of Indonesia comprises a series of islands located between Asia and Australia. It’s the world’s largest island country, with more than 17,000 islands in total available to explore.  Since the 800s, it has also been one of the most important areas in the region for trade. This has led to Indonesia becoming a very diverse and welcoming culture.

Anyone who visits Indonesia will find their way to Borobudur at some point. It is the most visited tourist attraction in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 9th century, it is a Mahayana Buddhist Temple and the largest of its type in the world. Nine stacked platforms are topped by a central dome and 72 Buddha statues.

Indonesia is also home to about 20% of the world’s coral reefs, which means that snorkeling and scuba diving is also on the to-do list. More than 3,000 different species of fish and over 600 different coral species can be seen in the various trenches and sea mounts that are available.

Bunaken National Marine Park contains more than 70% of all the known fish species in that part of the ocean on its own. Scuba diving is also a historical experience in Indonesia, with numerous wrecks from World War II accessible.

In total, there are 8 World Heritage sites to explore. There are rainforests to visit. Mountains to climb. From surfing to eat scallops from a street vendor and everything in-between, Indonesia offers you the opportunity to experience true personal freedom.

Indonesia is scattered with island resorts that offer a relaxing atmosphere for those looking to escape, but big breaks and exotic marine life are not far away for thrill seeking surfers and divers. Indonesia’s larger Islands are home to luscious mountain forests and tranquil rice fields, the perfect places for the cultural adventurer to explore historical palaces and villages. For fast paced fun, head to one of the world famous cities and shop till you drop, sample the delectable local cuisine or stay up late and enjoy the pumping nightlife.

For a restful island escape you will not find a more serene setting than the Gili Islands. Relax on the stunning beaches or spend your days snorkelling above the spectacular coral reefs.

Find Indonesia’s arts and culture centre in Ubud, Bali. Visit stunning palaces and explore the local streets lined with artisan stalls and cafes. Visit Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana, a lush forest with hidden holy temples and home to the cheeky Balinese Macaques. Jakarta is a must visit for the partygoer. The capital city boasts pumping nightlife, affordable shopping and world-class street food.

The first question to ask when planning a getaway is, when is the best time to go? Indonesia has a dry season and a wet season as opposed to the common four-season year. The sun is out in the months of May though to September -High season- and you are more likely to catch a downpour in the period between October and April -low season.

Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most serene island settings. The beaches are abundant, coral reefs lace the turquoise waters and accommodate some of the words best surfing breaks. If the beach is your thing be sure to visit the Gili Islands near Bali for snorkelling, diving, and kayaking. Lombok Island is a surfer’s paradise and just about any island in Indonesia is guaranteed to have a pristine beach for you to cool off or find a table for a calming massage.

If art and culture are what interest you then you will love Ubud District, the home of arts and culture in Indonesia. Here you will find Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana, a luscious forest that will appeal to those keen to trek beneath the canopies to find the three wondrous holy temples and meet the Balinese macaques. Visit also the Museum of Fine Arts and peruse examples of all of the eras of Balinese art.

For the real explorers Borneo is a must visit. The third largest Island in the world is divided between Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia, 73% being Indonesian territory called Kalimantan. Kalimantan is the site of Pasar Kuin, the worlds best-known floating market. Board at 5:30 and enjoy the atmosphere of this market made up of canoes, piled with local produce, being manoeuvred in close quarters. Don’t forget to visit the proboscis monkeys of the Mangrove Forest.

Travellers who are looking for a bustling city atmosphere will want to hop over to Java and visit the capital city Jakarta. Jakarta boasts a pulsating nightlife for those who feel the need to party and large shopping malls for the shopaholics. Head to Blok M, a reasonably priced shopping mall located above the bus terminal for clothes, shoes, DVDs and more.

Indonesian fare is famous for its seafood caught fresh from the waters dividing the Indian and Pacific Islands. Whether you are interested in street food or dining in one of the country’s many high quality restaurants, you will be delighted by the sweet and salty offerings from the Indonesian people.
