Visit Guimaraes

Guimaraes has an historic town center, day trip access to the Portuguese coast, and numerous cultural opportunities to enjoy. If you wish to experience authentic Portugal, this city must be included with your destination options. The culture of the city and the nation are on prominent display as you explore Guimaraes. You’ll find galleries, festivities, monuments, and museums will quickly fill up your day with interesting tours and sights to enjoy. You’ll also find a unique culinary scene to explore.

Since its very beginning as a feminine monastery, the confectionary scene has developed a life of its own. The pies of Guimaraes are spectacular, but one cannot leave this city without trying the Toucinho do ceu, or “bacon from heaven,” at least once. Festivities to enjoy during a stay in Guimaraes include the city festival held the first weekend of August and the Christmas festivities that begin the last week of November. One of the largest romaries takes place in July just down the road in Sao Torcato as well.

If you prefer a good museum tour during your stay, then the Alberto Sampaio museum must be added to the itinerary. It was founded in 1928 and opened to the public 3 years later. Inside you’ll find a collection of exhibits that date to the 14th century, including a rare vest that was once worn by King John I. Consider the Primitive Modern Arts Museum, located in the old city hall, as another option. Guimaraes promises to fill your days with adventure. Your task is simple: embrace the challenge and go have some fun.

Best of Guimaraes

Guimaraes Castle

Guimaraes castle is probably the best known and mythical in Portugal as it represents the birth of the nation. In fact it is known as the “Cradle of the Nation” because it was here where D. Afonso Henriques was born and raised and where he planned the wars for the independence of the Portugal province during the 12th century, becoming the first Portuguese king.

The origins of the Guimaraes castle can be traced back to 968, when the Countess of Galicia, D. Mumadona Dias, ordered the construction of a fortification to defend the populations and the existing monastery against the raids of the Norman / Vikings hordes from the coast and the Moors (Arabs) from the south. During the 11th century, Guimaraes had its defensive structure extensively enhanced when Count Henrique assumed the government of the province from King D. Alfonso VI of Leon. The existing tower and wall were augmented with additional towers, a keep and the widening of the original wall.

In 1129, D. Afonso Henriques proclaimed the independence of Portugal and several battles ensued, including that against his mother’s army who was against independence contrary to her initial belief. Despite Portugal’s independence being recognized in 1143, battles were fought with Spain until the 14th century due to the pretensions of Spain to dominate the Portuguese kingdom.

With the advent of the artillery, Guimaraes castle became outdated and was abandoned for several centuries. It was used as a prison, barn, and quarry. In a total state of ruin, it was recovered during the 1930’s to become the symbol of nationality.
