Visit Grenoble

If you just took a cursory glance at Grenoble and its customary gray concrete apartment blocks that seem to be a modern French tradition, you’d never believe that the city is a colorful and unique maze of streets that is often referred to as the “Capital of the Alps.” Home to the Olympic Winter Games in 1968, the history of this city dates back two millennia and is reflected in the vistas and cityscapes that are on display for  you. Are you wanting to experience the grandeur of this city for yourself? We’ve put together a few suggestions for you to consider as you finalize your plans to visit this beautiful city that is filled with remnants of antiquity

The Defensive Walls of Grenoble Are a Wonder to Explore

Grenoble throughout history has been at the center of conflict in one way or another. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it has seen several wars and several attempts at being conquered, which has led to series of defensive walls to be built. These relics to history stand as a testament to the conflicts of the past, but today make for a wonder to explore. Just touching the walls themselves puts you in touch with a taste of the desperation that led to them being built in the first place

After visiting the walls, if it is still early in the day then a visit to the Bastille should be in order. It’s an ancient series of buildings that sits on the mountainside that overlooks the rest of Grenoble. Ride the cable cars up that have been in operation since 1934 to get an incredible view of the city and a look at this set of fortifications that dates back to the Middle Ages. It’s one of the most popular sites in Grenoble, so if you can’t make it there early, you might want to want until the next day to visit

Why Not See the Museum of Grenoble While You Wait?

Although there are several excellent museums to see in this city, the prized gem of the all is the Museum of Grenoble. Nearly 200,000 people visit it every year and is known for its extensive collection of paintings that represent every era and major artistic style throughout history. The list of famous artists is very extensive and its collection of modern art is one of the best in all of Europe! There are also Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts on display. Before you leave, make sure to say a nice “Hello!” to the prophetess of Antinoe.

There are also several festivals that occur in Grenoble that can help you bide your time while you wait. The Jazz Festival in March is particularly enjoyable as you can enjoy some beautiful music during the transition into Spring. There’s a short film festival that is held every July if your preference tends to lean towards Cinema, while there’s a cabaret music festival at the end of July that will also bring a wide smile to your face.

Are you ready to visit Grenoble? If you are, then consider these suggestions today as you finalize your plans and you’re certain to have a great time in the Capital of the Alps!
