Located in the Madeira region of Portugal, Funchal is a popular city for cruise liners not just because it is easily accessed because of its location on an archipelago off the coast of Africa. It’s also one of the most beautiful cities to visit anywhere you might travel.
Named after the wild fennel that grew on the island when settlers first arrived, it quickly grew in the 15th century as the place where adventure would start. Are you planning on visiting Funchal in the near future? This incredible island city has much to offer, so here are just a few suggestions to consider experiencing so you can enjoy the essential Funchal visit soon.
A Tropical Garden on a Beautiful Island… Why Not?
Sitting just outside of Funchal is the town of Monte, just in the hills of the island. In this small community, you’ll find one of the best Oriental gardens in all of Europe just waiting for you to explore. Intricately laid flagstone paths wind down and around through thick foliage and gleaming structures painted in a brilliant red as you tour around the Monte Palace. When the flowers are in bloom, this garden is intoxicating, but a word of caution: avoid when a cruise ship is docked if at all possible because it will become very crowded!
As you come back into Funchal after this trip, after all that walking in the gardens you’re certain to be hungry. We recommend a visit to Jaquet while in town, which easily has the best seafood that you’ll have during your visit to the city. It’s not the biggest restaurant, but its rustic ambiance and family-orientated service will have you wanting to order more and more!
Are You Ready To Explore the Top of the World?
Located near Camara dos Lobos, a short journey will take you to one of the tallest cliff faces in all the world. It’s more of an adventure, which means you’ll want comfortable shoes and clothes. There aren’t any facilities on site either, so if you need some snacks, stop and grab some before heading out to see the view. And what a view you’ll see! Step out onto the built-up platform and you’ll get an incredible view of the beach below. You can literally see for miles out to the horizon for stunning images, sunsets, and much more.
If you want even more adventure, then you’ll really enjoy the trek from Pico Ruivo to Pico do Arieiro. It’s not a hike you’ll want to do when the weather is frowning upon you and you’ll need to be prepared for about 7 kilometers of walking, but your reward will be some stunning views of the surrounding area as you get some fresh air into your lungs!
Are you planning a visit to Funchal in the near future? If you are, then these essentials when combined with your own ideas will help you visit be even more rewarding! Plan your trip today to see what has drawn people to this archipelago for centuries!
