Best of French Polynesia

Spectacularly beautiful, pleasingly exotic, wonderfully relaxing and noticeably romantic; French Polynesia is a destination that simply cries out to be discovered. Here you’ll find everything from lush forests to isolated coves and all things in between. Put simply, if you’re determined to see nature in all its glory, you need to take a holiday to French Polynesia.

There are a number of island groups which incorporate this country, with the most famous being Tahiti and Bora Bora. Although there are a great many more should you wish to go island-hopping. Whichever type of vacation floats your boat; you’ll find it in French Polynesia.

Where you stay will of course depend on which island you choose to be your base. The majority of visitors will begin and end their odyssey on Tahiti, a spectacular island with a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. The capital city, Papeete, is the cultural and administrative capital, and it offers a number of impressive landmarks, gorgeous beaches and an exciting nightlife.

Elsewhere in French Polynesia, Bora Bora is a popular tourist destination, while the islands of Moorea, Tahaa and Tikehau, a coral atoll whose beauty has to be seen to be believed, are also well worth a visit.

As you might expect from a nation that consists of so many islands, the sea is never far away when you’re in French Polynesia. One of the most relaxing ways to spend an afternoon here is by taking a cruise on the water. As well as an opportunity to enjoy a cool breeze and a well-earned rest, you will also be able to savour views of the island which will remain in the memory for a lifetime. There are several cruises to choose from at the harbour in Papeete.

It can get extremely hot on Tahiti during the height of the summer, but one place where you will find some respite and a spectacularly beautiful natural wonder is at Maraa Grotto. There are three main caves here, and they should be on every visitor’s schedule. Be sure to bring your camera, and if it’s a really hot day you might want to linger here for a little more time than you had originally planned.

There are plenty of places in French Polynesia to enjoy some snorkelling, and the clear waters allow you to see a huge amount of marine life when you dive. Perhaps the most pleasant place of all is at the waveless lagoon on Bora Bora. If you enjoy viewing the undersea world in all its glory, this is the destination for you.

Thanks in part to the relaxed atmosphere of the islands, shopping in French Polynesia is always a pleasure and never a chore. And while you will find chic boutiques in Papeete, sometimes it’s more fun to shop at the smaller stores. You will see a huge number of products made from black pearls, a local speciality of course; so make sure you buy an item of distinctive jewellery during your stay.
