Visit Fréjus

Fréjus is located on the Côte d’Azur in southeastern France, between Saint Tropez and Cannes, the city is rich in history, culture, art and activities.

Freju’s history can be traced back to where it was part of the Roman city of Forum Julii, founded by Julius Caesar in 49BC and the first Roman military port in the Mediterranean. There are many archeological treasures from this period, including an amphitheater, theater and aqueduct.

The 13th century cathedral of Saint Léonce is part of a complex of buildings there around the Gothic bishop’s palace. The cathedral was built on the site of an older church from the 5th century and is interesting to visit. The cathedral tower has a characteristic square shape.

North of the cathedral is the beautiful monastery, the Cloitre de la Cathedrale de Fréjus, which also dates from the 13th century. The monastery is a French national monument. The octagonal baptistery, dating from the 5th century, is one of the oldest Christian sites in France.

The Archaeological Museum has exhibits that provide an insight into everyday life in Roman times as well as their ceremonies and rituals. There is a beautiful bust of Hermes, which has become a symbol of Fréjus.

The Roman aqueduct is impressive and there is the opportunity to follow the 40 kilometer long course with lots of archeological sites along the way, including a bridge with water channel over the Gargalon. The water was collected from the rivers Foux and Siagnole and then led by a series of underground canals and aqueducts to the Forum Julii.

To the west of the town is the lovely beach Plage du Pacha and to the east near Saint-Raphâel is the Plage des Sablettes. Occasionally there is a lovely sandy beach with shallow water called Nature François Léotard, which has a parking lot close by and facilities that make it perfect for families with young children, the elderly and visitors with special needs.

Frejus has a number of events, including the April Flower Festival in Aurélienne Park, the International Festival of Petanque in June and the Theater Festival in July. There is a colorful night market by the beach every night in July and August. In the fall, the Festival International de l’Air is in October, and in December there is a fun Christmas market.
