With the deepest harbor on the island of Cyprus, Famagusta is a city that offers visitors access to its ancient roots and Medieval influences while it provides a world-class resort experience. Founded in 274 BC, it has grown from a small fishing village into the modern marvel it happens to be today.
The Old Town of Famagusta is nicknamed the “City of 365 Churches.” According to legend, there was a church for every day of the year when Famagusta was at its peak of influence.
One of the most unique structures in Famagusta is the old Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Built in the 14th century, it was converted into a mosque about two centuries later. There are Gothic and Baroque influences to be found along its stone walls.
What has made Famagusta famous, however, isn’t the stunning beaches or the walled city, which contains numerous unique buildings that are worthy to explore. It’s the abandoned Varosha suburb. Fenced off by the Turkish Army after being captured, it has been frozen in time since 1974 with no one allowed to “officially” return. Those who have ventured into the neighborhood talk of dishes still being on tables and buildings looted down to the removal of tiles on the walls.
For the Medieval influences of Famagusta, be sure to make your way over to the Royal Palace entrance to see the stunning columns and archways and the large, open spaces.
