Elblag is a river port city that has some access to the Baltic Sea. It isn’t a deep water port, however, so there isn’t the heavy boat traffic that can make visiting a port city unattractive to some.
Elblag was actually almost completely destroyed during World War II, so some of the rebuilding wasn’t even started within the city center until the year 2000. Historically Elblag was a moated city, giving it a protective barrier from invaders. Founded initially in the 10th century, the city today focuses on the development of heavy machinery. Why should people visit Elblag? Because even though much of the historical parts of the city were initially destroyed, they have now been reconstructed, making this an adventure you’ll not soon forget.
A Visit to Old Town Should Be On the Agenda
Though the appearance of Old Town is definitely more modern than many other European equivalents due to the reconstruction, you can still get a feel for what Elblag used to be in its glory days before the war. The Soviet army laid siege to the city in 1945 and took out the entire western portion of the Old Town, for many years Old Town was neglected. With the restoration process, however, there are many shops and restaurants that will let you explore, refresh, and explore some more.
Explore St. Nicholas Cathedral
Only given cathedral status after its reconstruction in 1992, St. Nicholas has had a presence in Elblag since the 16th century. It resisted the protestant reformation for over a decade before finally converting to Lutheranism from Catholicism in 1573. Just 40 years later, however, it came back to its Roman Catholic roots and has remained that way ever since. The cathedral itself was initially built in the 12th century and has classic Gothic lines, but with a modern twist thanks to the reconstruction.
Take a Boat Trip on the Elblag Canal
Elblag was a major center of U-Boat construction during World War II because of its isolated location and shallow port waters. Focusing more on tourism these days, now you can see Poland in a unique way through the Elblag Canal. Experience the inclined planes as the boats travel over land in several locations as you traverse the canal and its intricate series of locks. Bring your camera because this will be a trip you’ll want to show off when you get back home! It does not open until May 1st after the winter, however, so plan your trip accordingly.
Are You Ready to Visit Elblag?
Elblag is a city that may still be on the rebound in some ways, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying what it has to offer. It is not a popular tourist destination because it doesn’t have the marquee sites that many tourists love, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have a good time or fall in love with the city. Why should people visit Elblag? Because you won’t find a more authentic way to enjoy all that Poland has to offer anywhere else.
