Tiny streets, lined with brick and cobblestone, show off the gentle beauty of a simple flower. Timbered homes, built in honor of the 16th century classic design, line the streets as a nod to the past, yet look hopefully to the future. Alsace wine in one hand with a friendly conversation around the table, Eguisheim is a community that has always influenced its region.
From the time of the Romans cultivated vineyards here to the Dukes of Alsace building an 11th century castle, people have flocked to this area. Winning the 2013 election for the most beautiful village in France is only going to increase its reputation. Here’s what else you can expect with a visit to this incredible community.
A Visit to Eguisheim Encourages Gastronomy
Many of the restaurants and shops in this village have a distinct mixture of Bavarian and classic French influences, giving each dining experience a unique flavor that other communities just can’t provide. There may be 17 restaurants in Eguisheim and they are all worth visiting, but what tops our list is the Pizzeria Le Dagsbourg. Have some pizza, enjoy some pasta, bring the family, and don’t forget to order at least one glass of the local wine.
If you need to grab some breakfast, journey on over to La Palette to enjoy the exclusive breakfast buffet. Stick around to have a dinner there as well because only locally sourced produced is used for the seasonal menus. The restaurant has some unique hours to work around, but if you can secure a table here, you’ll be in for a great time.
Eguisheim Is All About the Shopping
Wine tourism dominates the shopping experience at Eguisheim and rightly so. If you’ve had your limit of wine on a day, however, make sure to wander through the village to get a bite to eat at one of the bakeries or roadside stands. Get a fresh bratzeli, maybe a biscuit or two, and then explore the various trinket shops with a coffee if the day is just a bit cool.
If you’ve avoided the wine so far, then make your way over to Jean-Luc Meyer’s shop and rent a bicycle for the day. There’s no better way to enjoy Eguisheim because you’ll get the fresh air, have access to the pedestrian ways, and still be able to travel at speed. Rates are incredibly affordable, especially when in season, so perhaps do your tour in the morning before the heat of the day and the temptation for wine strikes.
As a final stop, make sure to tour through the RempART Gallery for some stunning modern works of art on canvas, in sculpture, and a variety of other mediums. With striking portraits and wonderful craftsmanship, you will find that if you had the money, you’d take home a good portion of what the gallery has for sale.
Eguisheim may be more of a day trip or weekend get away, but this charming village does have plenty enough to keep anyone occupied for their holiday away. Plan your trip here today, bring some comfortable shoes, and be prepared to enjoy the entire village experience.
