Visit Durdevac
Located in Croatia’s interior, Durdevac brings the small-town atmosphere to visitors thanks to numerous small village settlements. Just 6,300 people call Durdevac home, while the largest surrounding village has a population of about 400. Sveta Ana is home to just 100 people.
The old town is what tends to draw most of the attention when visiting this region. Built in 1488, it is referred to as a fort, a town, and a castle. It was constructed on the high ground in the region, in the middle of a swamp, and offers a tower height of about 9m. The grounds are extensive, and it can be a lot of fun to go exploring here on a sunny day.
There is a fairly popular desert zoo that is found in Durdevac as well called Croatia Sahara. It is more of a tourism project than a formal zoo, but you can get up close to a camel and have a friendly conversation with the horses and donkeys.
Then, to the south of Durdevac, is Dvor Barnagor. This small castle was owned by the Trezic family until 1987. Built in the late 19th century, it features an inner courtyard, a separate defense tower, and numerous architectural elements that speak to the “heroic romance” of the family. There are numerous activities held at the estate now throughout the year, from art to ceramics workshops to concerts. Just going out to experience the beautiful grounds is worthwhile, though a tour must be scheduled in advance.
Durdevac is the place to be if you want to get to know Croatia intimately. Plan your stay and it can be an amazing adventure.
