Visit Dunkerque
Dunkerque, or perhaps “Dunkirk” if you prefer, is one of the northernmost cities in France, sitting right on the English Channel. It was originally a fishing village of the Flemish people and because of its location, was often subjected to raids throughout its history. The name is familiar to many because it was a privateer base for more than a century thanks to it being claimed by four different countries at the same time. France gained complete control through a deal with England and turned it into a fortified port. Today’s Dunkerque offers a number of attractions for a visitor to enjoy, so if you are looking for a unique city in France to visit, this beautiful port city might just be it.
Miracles Are Known to Happen in Dunkerque
During the Battle of France, the German army had managed to drive back French and British forces with ease. In the haste of retreat, many of the British units had left their heavy artillery. Completely surrounded at Dunkirk, the end of the war could have happened right there as over 300,000 troops were stranded. The German commander ordered a halt to their advance, an order affirmed by Hitler several hours later, and eventually 900 boats ferried stranded soldiers to safety.
Called the “Miracle of Dunkirk,” this city still has the chance to make miracles happen for visitors today. Sometimes a miracle can be as simple as a day away at a beach that is quiet and peaceful. At other times, miracles happen through acts of generosity when you least expect it along the streets of the city. A visit to the Dunkirk British Memorial, which honors over 4,500 British soldiers who did lose the fight, will help you believe that miracles can happen again.
The Souvenir Memorial will help to reinforce this for you as well. This is a not-for-profit museum that is dedicated to this period in history and will help to take you through the events that happened. It’s staffed by volunteers who have a friendly smile and can answer most questions you may have.
The Cuisine Tastes Like a Miracle Too
There are plenty of excellent dining options in Dunkerque when you want a meal, but one of the highlights has to be La Demi-Lune. It’s more of a lunch destination than anything else, notable because it is the city’s first organic restaurant. The prices are extremely reasonable, the menu options are very healthy, and the flavors that you’ll experience are truly out of this world.
A journey to some of the city’s landmarks after a good lunch seems only fitting, so the free-standing belfry should definitely be at the top of your list. The Liar’s Tower is also a highlight, as is the church of Saint Eloi. Many head down to see Dunkerque’s town hall as well. If you happen to be in town for Carnival, then you will join a massive crowd of humanity around the town hall for an amazing experience.
Dunkerque will make you believe in miracles again. This port city offers beauty, affordability, and relaxation opportunities for all those who choose to visit. If that is what you need in your next holiday, then this is the city for you.
