Visit Dijon

You can find Dijon in the Burgundy region of France and settlements in this specific area date all the way back to the Neolithic period. There was a Roman settlement here as well, which eventually became the foundation of the modern city. It has traditionally been one of the most influential areas of France for science, art, and learning and that reputation still exists today.

With a number of unique artchitectural styles throughout the city, Dijon is truly a unique visual experience! What could a visit to Dijon look like for you? Here are a few ideas for you to include with your plans to visit this city so you can experience all of the essentials that are available to you!

Religious Sites Abound in Dijon

With over 2,000 years of what is essentially modern history, it is understandable that this city is a major hub of religion in France. There are a large number of churches that call this city home, with the Dijon Cathedral being one of the most visited sites. That’s because it contains the crypt of Saint Benignus, which is over 1,000 years old. With Gothic influences, this 13th century masterpiece was built over a basilica that had been built in the year 511.

Another one of the popular sights in Dijon is the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. The oldest portions of this well-preserved assemblage date back to the 14th century. Much of what you’ll see, however, is of the 17th century classical style that became popular throughout France. There are museums on the grounds and it also serves as the town hall for the community as well.

The Notre Dame of Dijon also offers a number of masterpieces to see and the church itself is considered one of the marvels of the 13th century. This Gothic architecture is one of the foundations of the old city center and the dark skin on the Madonna that you’ll find is one of the best example of this form of art that exist today.

Much of the City Has Still Been Preserved

Unlike other ancient cities in France, much of the damage that came about because of the world wars or the Franco-Prussian War didn’t come to Dijon, which means there are homes here that are still occupied and date back as far as the 12th century. Many of them have the classic half-timbered design and provide for a wonderful walking tour when you’ve got a sunny, cool day to enjoy.

Dijon is also a hub of nightlife, which means you can almost always find a live band playing at a neighborhood bar. Head on over to La Vapeur or l’Atheneum to enjoy the local experience.

You also can’t escape Dijon without at least trying the famous mustard from this city at least once. Today it contains white wine most of the time, but it originally was made with verjuice, which comes from squeezed grapes that aren’t quite ripe.

Dijon has some amazing sites to see and sits in one of the best wine growing regions in the world. Whether you want to enjoy the urban atmosphere or the country vineyards that surround Dijon, these ideas will help you enjoy every moment that you spend in this amazing community.
