Best of Denmark
Of all the landmarks and attractions in Denmark, and there are a great many, none have become quite as iconic as the Little Mermaid statue on Copenhagen’s waterfront. Like the Manneken Pis statue in Brussels, it’s not particularly large or overly showy, yet it has become a hugely popular symbol of the city in which it is located.
Many people who are yet to visit Denmark may be surprised by the quality of the beaches that are found in the country. One of the finest is undoubtedly at Tisvildeleje, a charming place some 60 kilometres north of Copenhagen. Whether you want to enjoy a little beachside nightlife or you simply fancy a day of sunbathing, this is the place to go. With so much to see and do in this nation, sometimes a little rest and recuperation needs to be on the agenda.
Denmark has a rich heritage, and it’s impossible to explore more of this without hearing about the Vikings. In many parts of the country, you’ll find museums and galleries dedicated to this period of history, perhaps the most fascinating of all is the Ladby Viking Museum. There are a great many artefacts on display here, and the most impressive is the Ladby Ship, a Viking grave ship that has been carefully restored.
Anyone who has ever visited a major Scandinavian city will know the locals love to shop, and in Copenhagen retail therapy is a way of life. The Strøget area is the most popular of all with both residents and tourists alike, featuring a huge range of stores selling everything from tiny ornaments to large pieces of furniture. The area is also home to a number of cafés, bars and restaurants; so you can always relax when the shopping gets to be too tiring.
If you have children with you, or even if you’re just a child at heart, no holiday to Denmark will be complete without a trip to the highly enjoyable Legoland Billund. This exciting theme park based on the famous construction toy that Denmark gave to the world is a popular tourist attraction, which offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages.
