Located in northeastern France, near the German border, this community often calls itself the Capital of Alsatian Wine and for a good reason: it’s right along the Alsatian Wine Route, which is a road that is 170 kilometers long and crosses the main wine producing regions of France. There are a number of fantastic sights and landmarks to see in Calmar, most notably the Maison Pfister house that was built in 1537 during the time of the German Renaissance. The Museums of Colmar Provide Unique Exploration Opportunities
At the top of the list of places to go is the Unterlinden Museum. It’s one of the primary museums for the entire region and many go there to see the Isenheim Altarpiece. It was sculpted in the 16th century and features a crucifixion scene that is unique because the artists gave the figure of Jesus a number of plague sores on the skin. This was because the Antonine monks of the monastery where this altarpiece was initially installed were known for their work in helping people who had skin diseases and the plague.
The Unterlinden also contains a number of engravings, artwork and several other altarpieces that were created by some of the areas famous names. Works from Lucas Cranach the Elder, Hans Holbein the Elder, and Albrecht Durer are apart of the permanent collection, as well as local early Renaissance artist Martin Schongauer.
For a collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, the zoological and ethnographic museum provides a large collection that has been on display in some form since 1859. The Bartholdi museum shows his life and work through a collection of paintings and drawings. There’s also a fun toy museum that will have kids of all ages having a good time!
What Else Does Colmar Have to Offer?
There are a number of fountains, monuments, and beautiful buildings to see throughout the city and that means a walking tour is the perfect way to fill the day. You’ll find three notable fountains that have statues that are by Bartholdi, plus numerous monuments that contain works by Bartholdi including his earliest major work, the Monument of General Rapp. There’s a replica of the Statue of Liberty to see as well.
Then you’ll want to make your way over to St. Martin’s Church, which is a classic Gothic church of a large size. It’s built on the foundation of an early church that was thought to have been built around the turn of the 11th century. The present building has been in place since 1234, although it wasn’t completed until 1365.
There’s a spectacular antique water tower to see, the Little Venice Area to explore, and countless hidden gems to enjoy. Colmar really does have it all and that makes it the perfect place to plan your next trip!
