Visit Cognac
The town of Cognac is famous for the production of spirits and has a rich history. The historic center, also called «Old Cognac», brings together the city’s rich cultural heritage. Between castles, hotels, religious buildings and parks, Cognac is full of places to visit. There are many famous cognacs that you can visit, such as Hennessy, Martell, Meukow or the famous castle Cognac, where the cognac Baron Otard is located. In all these places you can go on a cognac tour, discover cognac distilleries, the production methods and enjoy a cognac tasting.
Although the city of Cognac is often related to its famous spirits, its heritage and history go beyond this drink. One of the most important moments in the city’s history is the birth of King Francis I in 1494, who spent much of his life in Cognac, giving the city commercial privileges and allowing it to develop economically. Wealthy families then settled in the present neighborhood of the old Cognac and built beautiful half-timbered houses, some of which exist today.
Along the banks of the Charente, the towers and gates of the old port of Cognac testify to the medieval history of the city. There was a medieval bridge in the 12th century, which was destroyed in the middle of the 19th century, just after the creation of the current stone bridge that crosses the river.
The Saint-Léger church was built from the beginning of the 12th century and was gradually expanded over the centuries. You can see one of the oldest parts of the building, its facade with Romanesque features. It stands out by its three arcs and the 12 zodiac signs. The large rose window, which you can also see on the facade, was added in the 15th century, shortly before the religious wars that ravaged Cognac.
Close to the old Cognac district you can relax by visiting the city’s public park. This park covers an area of 7 hectares with several fountains, a Gothic pavilion and an orangery.
In the park, at the Hotel Dupuy d’Angeac, is the art museum. This building was built by the Dupuy of Angeac family in 1840. Here are collections of paintings, sculptures and archeological objects, donated by families related to the industry and production of cognac.
