Chances are if you are visiting the island of Crete that you’re going to spend at least a little time in Chania. Originally founded in the Minoan area, for many centuries the city was actually called Kydonia. When Crete was conquered by the Roman Empire, the city was granted status as an independent city-state within the empire.
Throughout almost the entire time under Roman rule, Kydonia even minted its own coins. It was not until the Second Byzantine era that the name of the city was actually changed to Chania. Why should people visit Chania? Because you’ll see glimpses of history, dating all the way back to the original Minoan settlement, as you explore this great city.
Go Out of Your Way to See the Harbor
What many people think of when they have thoughts about Chania is the waterfront. The best example of why the waterfront is so memorable is the Old Venetian Harbor. Get a taste of sea life as you explore the shops, markets, and homes that dot this beautiful waterfront. If you love calamari, you can get extremely fresh dishes that have just been taken out of the sea in a number of places. The cobblestones lead right up to the sea itself, letting you breathe in the salty air and take in the beauty that so many others have done throughout history.
Make Time to Explore the Botanical Gardens
Many of the residents on Crete consider the island a continent to itself. That philosophy is evident when you take the time to explore the Botanical Park of Crete. It’s just a short trip outside of the city toward the White Mountains and it is well worth the journey. The park itself grows many fruits and other produce that they use in their own restaurants and is home to a diverse array of wildlife. If you feel up to it, take the short hike of about two hours and experience the love and care that was taken to craft the park. Why should people visit Chania? Because with places like this to explore, you’ll be inspired!
Ancient Aptara Has Much to Offer
The island of Crete is even mentioned in the Bible, which means there are literally thousands of years of history to explore. At this site near Chania, you’ll get a touch of Rome… and a touch of World War II. Get your picture taken next to the Roman water cisterns and then get it taken next to a machine gun nest all at the same site! The views are amazing, the trip through history will help to give you perspective, and through it all, you’ll begin to understand why the island of Crete is a world unto itself. The site itself is still being excavated, so some amenities may be underdeveloped for some visitors, but all in all, you won’t get a more authentic experience.
