Carnac is known all over the world for its unique rows of ancient stones. The town is divided into two areas: Carnac-Ville and Carnac-Plage, a family seaside resort with a modern thalassotherapy center.
The standing stones of Carnac are one of Brittany’s biggest attractions. Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan have about 3,000 megaliths dating from 4000 BC. The granite stones were erected at the place where they were dug, hence the different sizes. Although it is not known why they were set up, it is believed that they had a religious or cultural significance.
The best place to start is the Maison des Mégalithes, where you can watch a movie in English about the megaliths. It is a good idea to book a guided tour.
A 10-minute walk from Ménec is Carnac-Ville, where you will find the Museum of Prehistory, which has one of Europe’s finest collections of prehistoric objects. In the center of the village is the Église Saint-Cornély, a lovely church from the 17th century named after the patron saint of cattle.
Carnac-Plage has five protected sandy beaches. The 2 kilometer long Grande Plage is popular with families as it is supervised in the summer and has two kids clubs. Légenèse and Ty Bihan are smaller and more comfortable, while Saint-Colomban is the place for windsurfers and kitesurfers. If you do not want to lie on the beach, you can walk along the coastal path to La-Trinité-sur-Mer or book some treatments in the thalassotherapy center.
