Visit Bratislava
As the largest city in Slovakia, Bratislava offers a visitor many advantages if they find their journey of life is leading them there. It’s a unique city as a capital because it borders both Austria and Hungary, the only national capital to border two independent nations. The Danube flows through town, offering visitors a chance to interact with nature.
A charming, cozy Old Town offers the chance to find some excellent hidden gems. Best of all, some of the best art spaces in all of Eastern Europe can be found within Bratislava’s city limits. Are you planning on a visit to this charming, beautiful city in the near future? If your journey is taking you here, then here are a few recommendations to help you enjoy your stay.
What Is That Towering Over the City?
You can’t go anywhere in Bratislava without feeling like someone is watching you. Once you figure out that it’s Bratislava Castle that is towering above you on the hill by the Danube and the Old Town, then you won’t feel so nervous any more! The castle itself is almost a complete reproduction because an 1811 fire left the original in ruins for more than a century. There’s a history museum on the grounds and make sure to enjoy the views of the city from the castle’s ramparts.
After seeing an overview of the city, it’s also a good idea to observe the inner workings of it as well. There’s no better place to do so than in the main square, where there always seems to be some form of a live performance going on. The fountain in the square dates back to 1572 – it was built to be a tool to put out the fires which were common in cities during this era.
A final stop at Bratislava Forest Park will complete the tour around this city. You can’t miss where the park is because of the TV mast that towers over the park, which you can actually climb to enjoy the viewing platform and restaurant on top. Make sure to take the cable car unless you want to take the 20 minute hike up the hill to the park entrance.
What Is That Smell That Is Floating Through the Air?
For a lively venue that features Slovak cuisine with some good English-style breakfasts, make sure to find yourself at Cafe Verne. There are a number of Czech beers that are on tap at this cafe and the no-frills menu is still quite satisfying. You’ll find that it is often busy, but you won’t mind the wait thanks to the atmosphere.
There’s also nothing corny about the Corny Cafe, which features coffee from around the world and a number of tasty cakes and soups to enjoy. If you want a quiche with your international coffee, you can pick that up as well. Take the time to relax out on the terrace and enjoy the views of the city as you relax with your treat!
What does Bratislava plan to offer you? Every journey is unique, but these stops can definitely provide you with a wonderful time during your stay here. If you’re ready to get away for a holiday or a weekend getaway, Bratislava is the place for you to be!
Best attractions in Bratislava
The seat of the Slovak National Theater is found in Bratislava, houses in two buildings, and have been open to the public since 2007. With a riverfront location, three ensembles are based out of the facilities. Ballet, opera, and dramatic events are held on a regular basis.
In 1961, the Slovak National Museum was founded and its headquarters are also on the riverfront, in the Old Town of Bratislava. The National History Museum is there as well, complementing the City Museum that has been in operation since 1868. The National Gallery offers two displays in Bratislava as well.
There are several famous sights to find while exploring Old Town, but the best may be the statue of Man at Work or the paparazzi statue. Trains run through the Old Town if you prefer to ride instead of walking to see what is offered.
The streets and squares of the Old Town are also lined with shopping opportunities, but there are 7 major shopping centers to explore. Avion Shopping Park is the largest of its type in Slovakia.
Bratislava is a city that offers something for everyone to enjoy. With an extensive system of parks and gardens, shows and racing events, plus a trail through history to follow, a stay here is truly a remarkable experience.
