Visit Bordeaux
With a name that is instantly recognizable the world over, Bordeaux is a powerhouse of the wine-making industry. The region around this city alone accounts for over 14.5 billion euros every year alone in wine sales! It is the home of the world’s primary wine fair and rightly so, as wine has been produced in this region since at least the 8th century.
The historic portion of Bordeaux is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of the preservation of its 18th century expansions. Are you thinking about a trip to Bordeaux in the near future? If you are, then here are some of our essential recommendations that may help make a good trip become great.
Of Course You Must See One of the Largest Squares in Europe
Just how big is the Place des Quinconces? It’s almost 31 acres in size, which means you’ve got plenty of space to wander about and enjoy the sites. The square was initially laid out in 1820 and was built as a defensive measure. The guns of the Chateau Trompette were trained on the square’s center as any attacker would need to run through the square. Today, however, the only running you’ll be doing is to go look at the magnificent sculptures and monuments that adorn the area.
Once you’ve enjoyed the square, a journey to the city’s center is in order so you can enjoy the 18th century charm that only Bordeaux can bestow upon you. It’s one of the first French cities to develop an urban identity and so many of France’s first large scale metropolitan projects are contained within this historical area. It’s not unusual to see a film crew taking stock shots of the city’s exterior as they develop a period production!
You Could Spend Days At the Fine Arts Museum!
The Fine Arts Museum in Bordeaux is one of the finest collections of paintings in all the world, yet it isn’t even the most famous art museum in its own country! You’ll find rooms dedicated to many of the world’s greatest artists with names that include Picasso, Matisse, Tiziano, Claude, Chardin, Renoir, Seurat, and many more. You’ll often find people getting lost in the world of the painter as they browse through the many selections and if you’re not careful, you could end up getting lost yourself!
There are several other museums of note in Bordeaux that are worth a visit as well if you have an extended stay. Our recommendation would be the Archaeological and History Museum if you can only add one more to your itinerary. The museum that focuses on the wine trade of the region is also quite interesting, while the Contemporary Art Museum focuses on local artists with a different perspective on life.
Are You Ready To Visit Bordeaux?
Wine, museums, and art are just the start of what a visit to Bordeaux can bring to your next holiday. Consider adding these items to your itinerary and you’ll begin to understand why some families have called this city home for more than 10 generations! Once this city grabs a hold of you, it doesn’t want to let you go. Truth be told, that’s not such a bad thing at all.
