Home to one of the ancient seven wonders of the ancient world that you can still explore today, the city of Bodrum was historically known as the Halicarnassus of Caria. Bodrum Castle, or the Castle of St. Peter, which was originally built by the Crusaders in the 15th century, overlooks the harbor and marina of the city and also now includes a museum that focuses on underwater archaeology. Colonized initially around the 7th century BC, the town has never seen much in terms of political or religious extremism and has predominantly been a fishing village throughout history.
Get the Chance to Walk on Water
One of the more unique adventures that you can take during a visit to Bodrum is to visit Rabbit Island. How do you journey to Rabbit Island? By walking on the ancient ruins of the city of Myndos in Gumusluk Bay. You can also take the time to snorkel amongst the ruins and explore around the island if you wish. Exploring Rabbit Island itself is frowned upon since it is an active archaeological site currently, so after you’re done walking on the submerged remains of a civilization, be sure to get a meal on the beach and enjoy the bay.
The Windmills of Bodrum
You can see the windmills up on the hillside, yet many people tend to never make it up to them in person. If you choose to do so, you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque view of the city and sea below you. There’s no restoration that has taken place and little in the way of service, so a great way to enjoy this adventure is to pack your own picnic lunch, bring a bottle of wine, and make sure your camera has its batteries fully charged. The view itself is worth the trip and the contemplation of these old sentinels that sit up on the hillside make you think about times that have gone by.
The Myndos Gate Is Worth Going Through
If you like to visit historical sites that aren’t always frequented by tourists, but don’t necessarily like the strenuous exercise that some sites require to visit them, then the Myndos Gate will satisfy your needs. Built in the initial fortification of the city, it is the only gate that still has remnants left. Some efforts have been taken to restore the gate itself, so the area is easy to access, but still out of the way enough where people don’t always choose to go exploring.
Bodrum has always been a peaceful place to live and visit and this is evident when you take the time to visit the city for yourself. The city has seen a rapid increase in population within the last decade, but that has done nothing to spoil the historical significance that this city holds. Why should people visit Bodrum? Because it has historical perspective, modern amenities, and is a wonderful place to relax, explore, and contemplate.
