Visit Bastia

Located on the island of Corsica, Bastia is one of the largest cities on the island and serves as the islands principal port. It is famous for its wines, but that isn’t the only reason to plan a visit to this beautiful region! Located between the sea and the primary mountain that makes up the island, Bastia sits in a place where Italy can be seen in the distance when the visibility is good. Many come to enjoy the water or the wine, but we’ve put together a few additional suggestions for you to consider if you’re headed out to Corsica or for an extended visit to Bastia. Let’s take a look!

The Museum of Corsican Ethnography Is Fascinating!

Located in the palace that formerly house the Genoese governors, this museum takes a look at all things Corsican in a very unique way. It covers a wide variety of topics, which means you’ll really get a taste for the flavor of the local culture. Art, geology, flora and fauna, history, and even the islands folk traditions are all on display in a number of interesting exhibits.

Once you finished your tour of this museum, we recommend stopping for refreshments at LN Mattei. Many of the dishes feature chestnut flour that has been locally milled, local cuisine is put up for your consideration in a very gourmet way. The highlight is the fig-scented salt that you can sprinkle on just about anything! Grab a bag of myrtle peanuts, maybe stop and linger over a brandy, and you’ll likely find this place as irresistible as we did!

If seafood is more your style, however, you can’t go wrong with what is available at Chez Huguette. It’s more toward the fine dining side of the equation, but has been around since 1969, so you know that they’re doing things right! You must order the langoustes that are caught locally if you choose to dine here.

Enjoy Some Time at Place St-Nicolas

Located right along the seafront, you’ll find the the Place St-Nicolas between the harbor and the ferry port. If you recognize the name, then you’ll understand the local nod to the seafaring heritage that Corsica has always enjoyed throughout the centuries. Lined with several cafes along the western terrace, you’ll find plenty of shade trees protecting you just as the patron saint of sailors protects them against the crashing waves.

You’ll also want to make your way down to the Old Port, which you can’t miss with the stunning pastels that glisten in the afternoon sun. For a good photo op, make your way up the twisting staircase toward Jardin Romieu to get a full view of the waterfront vista. It’s the perfect way to start or end your day!

Bastia is an incredible example of what Corsica is all about. If you’re planning a visit to this French island, then be sure to include these ideas with your own so that your time away can be as fantastic as possible!
